Hi I have low score in Step 1 (79) and 90 in step 2, i will take csa nexy week. I am currently a post-doc research fellow in a university surgery department in US and two rotations in US. I applied to 40 programs un gen surgery, 7 in university based and 33 in community hospitals. Upto now I dont have any interview and 6 rejections (all university based), my question is the following: AS AN IMG, Do I have any possibility with this background? What can I do to increase my possibilities? (more than increasing number of programs) Thanks !!!

We need to talk frankly. It's late in the interview season here. Do you need a position for next year or can you stay in research for another year? Your scores are low for surgery, even if you were a US student. That can't be changed. Otherwise, you have USCE and I am assuming good to great LoR from your two rotation and your research supervisor. And you are doing research now in your field. You are doing all the extres you should be doing. Is it enough with your scores??? Unfortunately we all get screened by our scores and the fact that we are IMGs. Many program will just triage you without really looking at your CV. Have you been rejected by the program where you work? That place is one of your best options. Has your PI e-mailed or called or takled to directly the PD at your school or anywhere else he/she has connections? Never underestimate the value of connections. I would tell you to go talk with the PD at your school. They are usually pretty frank about these things. They would have the best idea if it is realistic or not for you to be considering surgery for a residency. If you need a job for next year, you need to quickly apply to some easy programs just so you have something. If not, then one option is to try and publish in a big name journal. Other options which will take extra time are: get an MPH, PhD. Do a residency in pediatrics and after 3 years apply for pediatric surgery. Try for prelim positions in surgery. Do medicine or family practice first (in FP you get to do surgery as a resident, so the surgery attending get to see and work with you). Then try and transfer out of them into surgery. I have noticed it is easier to get into a different discipline if you are alredy there at a place doing something else (but don't count on that). Anyway, good luck. Get someone who knows to be frank with you (PD, someone involved in interviewing applicants). How badly do you want surgery versus something else.
