Case control is an retrospective study

At the moment of study we have 2 groups

Case = Disease

Control = Without disease

And we look back in the past to search for the risk factors that may cause the disease and compare them in the two groups

It is opposite to the cohort study which is prospective

One groups with the risk factor such as smoking

Another is without smoking

At the moment of study, both of two groups have no disease as cancer

And we observe the incidence the difference of cancer incidences of 2 groups later.

You got it:
Advantages of case control:
cheap, quick , few subjects, may show multiple potentila cause of a ds.

Disadvantages:
bias may come in to play since they have the ds, undiagnosed cases are missed, selecting the control may be difficult, they cannot prove cause effect relationship, "cannot determine rate, risk, incidence or prevalence"

*This is how the relation between DES/ clear cell CA of the vagina was discovered!
