I just PM this to someone, and it is something I get asked a lot, so I thought I would just post it on the website. Don't know if this is the right forum or not for this, but anyway

I do HIV research. I didn't really apply for it, they offered me it when I was in India finishing my housemanship. I did an elective rotation here as a student, so they knew me and liked me.

It is definitely helpful to do research at a med school. Don't underestimate it's importance. If you do do that, make sure you try and get a post-doc position and not just a lab technician position. Not only does it pay better, it looks better on your CV. Try and get your name on some publications and better yet try and be the first author. A word of warning though, you have to like what you are doing. If you can't stand research and basic science, don't do it.

Even more important from a residency point of view is USCE. If you have that (with LoR from your attendings), you will be in very very good shape. That, I think, is more important than research, if you can get it.

One more note on research and USCE, try and do that at at school which realistically might accept your for residency. Your Profs' LoR will have more sway at their own school.

Good luck!

hi
i already have 1 month USCE in gen surgery with 2 LORs, 1.5 years back. should i go for another 1 month USCE in gen surgery (my interested residency) or do research or just sit back and study harder in the time saved and get a higher score in step 2.

thanks in advance
