hi CMDT mentions that pregnant women who work in police or fire department are at high risk for acquiring Hepatitis B (in addition to the usual high risk factors) [pg 729, 2004 ed] and therefore they should be vaccinated during pregnancy. Wonder why being a policewoman or a woman fire-fighter would put someone at increased risk for "Hepatitis B"? :?: any explanations? i can't seem to make out why... regards drvic

Possible exposure to Blood in the line of duty.. but I am not sure about why only if they are pregnant. According to CDC... You may be at risk for hepatitis B if you: Have a job that exposes you to human blood. Live in the same house with someone who has lifelong hepatitis B virus infection. Inject drugs. Have sex with a person infected with hepatitis B virus. Have sex with more than one partner. Are a child whose parents were born in Southeast Asia, Africa, the Amazon Basin in South America, the Pacific Islands, or the Middle East. Are a patient or work in an institution for the developmentally disabled. Have hemophilia. Travel internationally to areas with a high prevalence of hepatitis B. I would go with vaccination whether they are pregnant or not. VM
