A 45-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis calls the physician on a Saturday morning because she cannot turn the bathroom faucet due to pain and weakness in her hands and wrists. She is tearful and says, "My husband has already left for work and my hands are too weak to turn the water on. It hurts too much and now I can't even take a bath." Which of the following is the most appropriate response? A) "Come to the office right away and I will give you a cortisone shot." B) "I know this must be difficult. Perhaps a plumber may be able to help you." C) "I sympathize with you. Unfortunately, it looks like your only option is to wait until your husband comes home." D) "Many people with rheumatoid arthritis have difficulty turning faucets. Perhaps you would be interested in joining a support group." E) "People with rheumatoid arthritis often feel that their independence has been lost because of their pain. Perhaps using a tool with a long handle would help." pls give your opinions some says it's "d" and sone says "e". so pls.

**answer-e answer-d- doesnt directly address her problem. This is similar to "turfing" (referring) answer-e -shows that the md is using his cerebrum, he is addressing her problem directly and she is not losing her independence and can remain autonomous!!!

I was gonna go with D.. now I am not sure after mjl's answer.. well the answer E sounds good but it just solves the faucet problem( provided she has a long handled tool at hand, which means she wouldnt have to call the doc in the first place) but then she may not even be able to turn the door knob on the bathroom or turn the key to the car ignition to get to the doc even.. so I am more inclined to the support group than long handle tool.I think the fact that there are others in her situation is more important to the patient.which both answers refer to.. I think why some say D and some say E coz the real answer should have read.. " peopel with RA often feel that they lost their independence coz of the pain. perhaps you would be interested in joining a support group" Just a thought.. since thats what Id say.. I sure hope they give only one of those choices ..

i would go with d, because getting a long handle is not going to help her disease, support therapy has been proven to be effective treatment. Seriously though, i don't see that much wrong with a, it's direct, solves the patients problem, and gives you an opportunity to address the support group problem... but these doctor patient scenarios throw practicality out the window, so i'd stick with D, cuz your main concern is not whether she showers or not, it's for her to cope with her disease.
