Well, I can't answer for all the countries. I have residents in my program, that have come on visas from: Jordan, Syria, Pakistan, Lebanon, and Bahrain. It's not impossible, but I won't lie to you and tell you that it's been easy. Several physicians have been any where from 2 weeks to 3 months late in starting the program. Physicians from Iraq that we interviewed were permanent residents - and I don't recall the last time someone that trained in Iran applied for my program. I do know that the last Iranian we had was a permanent resident, but he was in medical school in Italy. A lot of the difficulty isn't in obtaining a visa from some of these countries, but since the governments are involved in the medical schools, the schools cannot or will not release the credentials for their graduates. Without credentials, it's hard to become licensed, or obtain ECFMG certification. Hope this helps.

I know of two residents that completed my program from Bahrain. Wonderful people! Would have him back in the program in a heartbeat! I'll get in touch with them and see if they would be willing to help you (without giving me away  ).

Doctor: Many persons from Pakistan, Iran and other countries find themselves in your position. They pass steps 1 & 2, but can't get visa to take step 3. We have a program in St. Petersburg Russia, where you can study for one year and get a green card. Here's the message I'm sending out to other doctors. Hope to hear from you. Medical doctors: Many of you, especially from the Asian and Middle Eastern countries are facing USMLE Step 3 "catch 22". You've passed Steps 1 & 2, are scheduled for Step 3, but can't get a visa to go to the US. No Step 3, no ECFMG certificate, and no residencies in US. We have a legitimate one year program in St Petersburg Russia, where you study in ENGLISH to get your nursing diploma, which qualifies you take the nurse's CGFNS exam, (http://www.cgfns.org) which will get you a GREEN CARD to the US to work as a nurse, while you complete your requirements for residency. Bullshit ?, don't laugh, over 2000 MDs in the Philippines are studying for their nursing diplomas for this very reason (http://www.inq7.net/nwsbrk/2002/dec/09/nbk_6-1.ht...). We'll guarantee you a job in the US as a nurse, and the green card. Contact me if you're interested, or do a friend a favor and send him this message, he or she may someday thank you from the US. The problem with getting a nursing degree, and then taking step 3, is that you have to work as a nurse for "x" number of years. That puts you even more years away from medical school, and less likely (but not impossible) to gain a residency position. Good luck

Even though Iran is in the so-called axis of evil!, one should keep in mind that has nothing to do wit the iranian people who are suffering from both sides the iranian government and the western countries! If you really want to come here to do a residency program you must follow the path despite all these problems. I can't tell you how but I'm sure you'll find a way. Good luck Iranian/ Los Angeles, CA

Being farther from medical school while one works as a nurse is partially true. In balance, consider this. He or she is in the US, around a medical/hospital setting, studying to pass their remaining steps. There is a two year requirement that the doctor who gets the nursing diploma and then the green card work as a nurse for that period of time. But, they have arrived in the US with a green card, which there is no requirement they remain working as a nurse to keep, are employed in a well paying profession, and their worse case scenario is that they have to remain in the US and pursue some other related healthcare profession if they area unable to become licensed, or as in the case of the fellow who started this "axis of evil" return to Iran. Good luck in whatever you decide to do rudy-m@bigfoot.com
