why order humidified oxygen for a 3yr old?

  #2

Theoretically, cool humified air decreases the viscosity of exudate, making it easier for the child to cough up secretions.5 Although humidity soothes inflamed laryngeal mucosa, it has no effect on subglottic edema.5 The main risk associated with mist tents is that some children with a history of asthma may experience increased wheezing from the cool aerosol. If wheezing continues or worsens, cool mist should be discontinued.5 Also, the high output of aerosol decreases visualization of the patient, hampering close observation for worsening respiratory distress or failure.8 Patients in croup tents should be assessed at least every four hours for respiratory distress, air exchange, and mental status.8 Mist tents may also frighten and provoke anxiety, leading to an increased respiratory rate.1 Attention should be given to the anxiety and apprehension of both patient and parents. It is important not to separate the child from the parent. A mist tent should be used as long as the child tolerates it, particularly during sleep. A reasonable alternative is to maintain at least 50 percent relative humidity in the child’s room. Supplemental oxygen may be indicated with evidence of hypoxemia.1
