Interesting question. We see Enterococcus faecalis in all kinds of specimens. It is one of the main normal components of feces and is considered normal flora there. Some of them turn into VRE (Vancomycin resistant enterococcus) along with E. faecium. They are present in positive blood cultures, positive urine cultures, wounds and abscesses of all kinds.

enterococcus is a normal inhabitant of the GIT. i think it can be transmitted by trauma resulting in the presence of the organisms in the bloodstream.. then from there, it may travel to the heart or urinary tract...

Fecal -oral route must be an obvious route, along with Hepatitis A!
