1) Suppose a couple go to US, both as residents on J1 visa, and lets say the wife's residency gets over early. Then can she change her visa status to J2 or does she have 2 go back to her home country for 2 years? Unknown - check with ECFMG
2) Have heard that J1 is given for max 7 years and H1 for 6. Suppose one wants to do cardiothoracic surgery. then thats 5yrs general surgery and then 3years cardio. So its not possible? You would have to apply for an exception - sometimes they get granted.....
3) Is a J1 at a better residency program better than a H1 in a comparitively worse one? What should one choose and when? Are you looking for a fellowship following residency? Then you want a J1 visa. Many fellowships will not sponsor H1b visas.

Each of you would have to apply for a separate waiver or spend 2 years in home country.

If your primary goal is to practice medicine in US, H1-B is better. If your primary goal is to get a fellowship training , J-1 is better.

HI I have a J1 Visa now and I'm applying for a waiver under the No Objection criteria. Hopefully I'll get it!!!! I have been offered a position in Urology, but I need to have the waiver approved first. Does anybody know the timing for the step 3 in order to be eligible for an H1b Visa??. As Urology has an early match, I have to answer the program director before the 1st week of January, and I won't have the step 3 results by that time yet. Can I have my step 3 results by March-April and then get the H1b Visa ? and If a can't do that ....is there any restriction to get a new J1 Visa (this time for the residency) right after a previous J1? PLS inputs. Thanks

I have been telling my applicants that they need to have Step Three results in their hands by the end of March to be eligible to apply for an H1b visa. April 1 means a J1 visa. What do you mean a "new J1 Visa (this time for the residency) right after a previous J1"? If you mean that you had a J1 for research - yes, their is a restriction - it's on the ECFMG web site - you have to wait for 12 months.

BBB, so if I currently have a J1 visa for research, I can not apply to the 05-match? I would have to wait 12 months from the date my current visa expires to be able to get a J1 for residency? I read the ECFMG-J1 Fact Sheet and could not find info regarding this.. I greatly appreciate your input.
