its E, ondansteron, which is 5HT antagonist, and works centrally and peripherally. cyproheptadine is first generation antihistamine, which doesn't have to do anything here.

its E, ondansteron, which is 5HT antagonist, and works centrally and peripherally. cyproheptadine is first generation antihistamine, which doesn't have to do anything here, the case is of carcinoid syndrome.

There is ambiguity in this answer.
Odansetron and Cyproheptadine are both for carcinoid, both inhibit serotonin, both potently inhibit 5HT, both inhibit histamine ,both inhibit alpha receptors. Its just that odansetron is newer.
Mani is a veteran here.

odansetron is used more for catnral antiemetic effect, and cyproheptadine more for diarrhea, that what i think.

Agree with mani.

Cyproheptadine is a competative pharmacologic antagonist. It inhibits serotonin and has alpha blocking effects.

Ondensetron has significant central antiemetic actions. And toxicity inclueds diarrhea and headache.

  #8

Just an addition, for carcinoid, octreotide is also used.

Also it is treated with somatostatin and methysergide. Octeocride is the treatment of choice if control of diarrhea and flushing is the aim.
