Reduviid bug causes CHAGAS DISEASE. (T.CRUZI)

There are acute and chronic phases

In acute phase there will be facial edema and a nodule near the bite. With fever lymphadenopathy and hepatosplenomegaly.

In chronic phase there will be myocarditis and megacolon.

Death from chagas disease is usually from cardiac arrythmias and failure.

Reduviid bug ( genus Triatoma )..is a mode of transmission for trypomastigote ...which is responsible for Chagas' dis...

Chagas' dis. or American trypanosomiasis is caused by T. cruzi.It is a zoonotic infection transmitted by "reduviid bug "( also known as kissing bug or cone bug ) which passes trypomastigote in feces as it bites.When person scratches on that bite site...this organism ( trypamastigote) implanted in site...

Early signs of Chagas' dis. is swelling around eyes ( Romana's sign ) .

Clinical dis. are caused by invasion of
lymphoid macrophage system
myocardium
endocrine gland and
neural tissue.

Dx
Blood Films ( Xenodiagnosis )

Rx
Early stageNifurtimox
Chronic stageNo effective therapy ?

xenogiagnosis... is not the blood film... it is using "clean" reduviid bugs to feed upon the suspected case, then examine its stomach contents for parasite.

Thanks for the correction....I shouldn't put Xenodiagnosis in brackets next to Blood Film D Yes,it is different method than Blood Film..
Xenodiagnosis
A method of diagnosis based on exposing a parasite-free normal host to the parasite and then examining the host for parasites.
In other words...
A laboratory triatomine bugs are first allowed to feed on the patient.The stools of the bugs are then examined for the presence of parasites. P
