Just an addition guys, I read somewhere that if asked what is the MOST COMMON mycobacteria species affecting an patients with AIDS, it should be TB....any thoughts????

hI MLF.......Your Q is really good.
Here....choices B. Mycobacterium avium and C. Mycobacterium kansasii ...both are associated with AIDS.
But,if you have to choose one ...B) is the right choice.
Because,M. tuberculosis and M. avium-intracellulare complex ( MAI) are major problems in HIV-infected and AIDS pt.

M. tuberculosis with normal CD4 count or low CD4 count ( disseminated )

Yes i agree with you 100% niti, that, without even looking at the choices, the first answer that came to my mind was m avium. I gues they would have to give us the CD 4 count in order to be better able to figure out if TB was also one of the choices. Thanx!

The most likely bug is MAI. However, please realize that "regular" blood culture bottles will not support the growth of Mycobacteria of any species. You must inoculate special blood culture bottles for acid fast bacteria. Check with your local laboratory as to what their methodology is for this test.
