what's the underlying mechanism for the yellow skin discoloration noted on primary hypothyroidism ?

Is it due to the less metabolism due to decrease in hormones causing a rise in cholesterol????Just a guess.

thyroxine enhances intestinal conversion of b-carotene to retinol
so lack of thyroxine --> b-carotenemia --> yellow skin but white sclera

remember also that thyroxine --> surfactant synthesis

thyroxine = big time hormone :wink:
