When FIO2 is 0.6 or greater or is required for more then 72 hours.
It can be prevented with PEEP therapy to keep O2 levels below 0.6.
Thought to be caused by O2 free radicals on the lung interstitium.
The therapeutic use of antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase, catalase
selenium, vitamin E is expeerimental
