That is an intersting question. We will see what will bbb say. The very important thing is that you during your externship/observership make good impresion on doctors of that hospital , so you can ask them on the end to give you recomendation letter that will be very usefull when you apply for residency.

"Which carries more value eventually, while applying / getting into a residency..........is it doing an externship/observership/reasearch assistant ship" Think, I must think.....A real answer, not sugar coated (because you all want the truth and not what you want to hear, nicht wahr?) - and remember, this is what I have seen in my experience, which won't be the same for all the programs or specialties..... An externship is the most valuable - especially a US hospital externship. Also, if you have completed any rotations while a student - in a US hospital - that's important too. Research? Very important if the project went to publication and you were one of the primary investigators. Observership? Well, it depends. If performed in a hospital, that's good. If performed in a physician's office - it won't carry the same weight as any of the above.

After graduation from medical school, many IMG's are studying for the USMLE's and looking for clinical experience in the USA. Some hospitals have a program for an "externship" - which is hands on experience, working as a volunteer, with patients. An internship and a clerkship are medical school rotations - once you have graduated medical school, you can't do those. The option after graduation is externship or observership. Clear as mud:?:

That's the beauty of it , you don't have to do an observership or an externship. If your scores are strong enough, you won't need either! I have many residents in my program (possessive of my residents, aren't :?: ) that had no US clinical experience prior to starting residency.

Hi there! Are there any FMG's-residents that have graduated long time ago in your program? And if not, do you personally know succes stories of people who've graduated let's say 1994? Thanks for your help and the best of wishes. Andrea, looking forward to your replies.

"Are there any FMG's-residents that have graduated long time ago in your program" My oldest intern is 47 this year. Most are recent graduates of medical school, but one came from Armenia and she graduated in 1995. We have had a couple physicians who practiced in India for several years, then completed my IM program, finished fellowships in the same specialty they practiced in India, and now remain on staff here. It's not impossible.

There is no central clearing house for observership or externships - call or email programs that you might be interested in participating in this and see if they offer these positions. There is no easy way to find one - unless you know someone who currently is in one and can let you know.

Dear bbb, It seems like you`ve been more than a guide in this forum. It`s really great to have someone helping us all. Thank you !!! I`m also an IMG seeking for some answers and you`ve helped a lot. I´ve noticed from forum topics that you are involved in a Residency program although not as a resident...am I right :? ? Are you an IMG yourself? Hope you don`t mind me asking that. My email is fsdmd99@yahoo.com.br Best whishes, Fernanda

Hi Fernanda, No, I am not an IMG, although I have lived overseas and can understand what moving to a new environment means. I have been a residency program coordinator since 1988 in three different hospitals. I have been in my current position since 1994. Why do I do this? Well, shouldn't someone?

dear BBB, I have a question does it matter if someone does an elective in obstetrics and gynecology then applies later for a residency in medicine. Does it carry the same weight f an externship in medicine. and do you consider a good latter of recommendations if the recommnder is not from medicine and say it's a good letter. ok i admit it not A question, they're three now
