Dear Fellows, Q1: FP and IM - Which is more competitive? I have already applied to FP's but now having double thoughts about IM. Though IM tends to hire more IMG's but they got an attitude especially in TX. Q2: How likely is that Faculty might test you on your medical skills? I have head from some people that they were faced with a one or two medical questions. Any comments? Thanks in advance

Q1: IM is a little more competitive than FP. Q2: It is very unlikely to be tested. The boards already did that. Source: Iserson's Getting into a Residency

IM I would say is a lot more competitive than FP, even though IM is already pretty easy to get into. By that I mean, if you have great scores, you will get into a very good FP program. Otherwise, there are many many more FP programs than IM (although they tend to be smaller in size). The focus of the interview is not likely to be med questions, but as with everything else, it depends on the interviewer. I know Mass Gen and Boston Children's tends to pimp. Their arguement is that on paper, all of their interviewees are wonderful. This is for them to try and sort them out. Look at www.scutwork.com for reviews of some programs. So people talk about being pimped, but it seems to be the exception rather than the norm.
