I hear people saying that you have to try to get an understanding of the material in order to pass Step 1 - FA says it like this: "Strive to gain an understanding rather than rote memorization."

My question is this, though: what really is understanding? I mean, I've just finished the Anatomy section of FA, and now I'm going to review it before I go on to Behavioral Sciences; I've highlighted almost all of the section - am I making a mistake in trying to remember all of it? Cause that's what I planned on doing - just going over all of it again. I guess what I'm really asking is what should I understand from this section? And perhaps any of the other sections? And how do I get from rote memorization to understanding?

Comments appreciated...and I apologize if the question seems unclear...

what i feel is...first you should be thorough with the basic study material then go to FA.Then you will have undestanding and meaningfullness to all words in it.
Doing only Fa is tough.Plus you can add Things in your FA from your review books.
Its from my perosnal experience.I dont know your background.

Hi acadm,
I think that I understand your question very well. You got all this idea of reading FA first as it is highly recommended..and you also understand the importance of understanding concepts..
Those people who give this advice to memorize FA..they also study whole concepts first and spend time with good review books..then.. when they read FA....it looks everything is there..this is also my experience...because,initially I also tried to do the same thing....FA first then...other stuffs accordingly!!.turned out waste of time....
I hope,I answered your Q..

Understanding is basically what niti and wannabemd are saying, because starting off your studies with FA might not be such a good idea, unless you know your concepts already. Like for example, in anatomy, when they talk about the tracts in neuro part, do you know how the tracts work exactly, cuz FA just gives you a schematic of the spinal cord and then you have to see if its syringomyelia, multiple sclerosis, etc, but like they don't explain how Dorsal column, spinal thalamic, or corticospinal actually work, like you have to know that spinal thalamic decussates rite away in spinal cord whereas the dorsal columns in the medulla. So stuff like this where you gotta have an understanding first and then you can add this stuff rite onto your FA so when you go back after knowing all the "mechanisms and concepts" as dr. goljan says, then its easier for you to know the FA. I hope we helped you.
