An individual develops an acute episode of vomiting and diarrrhea and looses 3 kg in body weight over a 24-hour period. A blood sample shows that plasma (Na) is normal at 145.
Indicate whether the following parameters would be increased, decreased or unchanged from before the illness:
Plasma osm.----
ECF volume---
Plasma ADH-----
Urine osm-------
Sensation of thirst----

semieducated guess:

plasma osmolarity-unchanged
ECF-decrease
ADH-definitely increased
urine osmolarity-increase
thirsty

Would there also be a metabolic alkalosis and hypokalemia?

well done mjl1717!

"the 3-kg weight loss reflects only the loss of ECF. Because the plasma Na+ is unchanged, this represents a loss of isotonic fluid (3L) from the ECF.
Plasma osmolality: Because the plasmaNA+ is unchanged, the plasmaosm is unchanged
ECF-vilume: The loss of fluid will decrease the ECF volume, because it is isotonic fluid loss.
ADH. Volume depletion is sensed by barorec, and ADH secretion is stimulated.
Urine osm: The increased levels of ADH will lead to water conservation by the kidneys, and concentrated urine will be excreted.
Thirst: will increase via baroreceptors.
