HI

I thought it would be a type 1 or alpha error, mistakenly believing there is an effect where as in fact none exists.

But I thought a type one WAS an alpha error - so more than one answer would be correct??

Ans. Type I error.

I would think about it in this way.

Whenever you falsely reject null hypothesis it is type I error.

Whenever you falsely fail to reject null hypothesis it is type II error.

In this case, the null hypothesis is that acetaminophen will not help cure common cold.

Here you are rejecting null falsely so it is type I error.

Also, as far as I know there is no term such as "alpha error" or "beta error".

Alpha is the level of significance or the cut-point, beyond which we would not like the probability of type- I error to cross.
