Kaplan Qbank USMLE

I finally got my results, and I figured that I will post here & try to help others out.

I think the best way to approach this exam is to:
1 - Have a good understanding from prior courses.
2 - Memorize First Aid. Every detail from this book will be on the exam. It took a lot to convince me that such a short book is "the way to go", but looking back at it, it truly is the best source.
3 - I supplemented with several High Yields (e.g. Biochem, Behavioral, Neuro) and other resources (e.g. Netter, www.mediglyphics.com which was excellent for "making sense" out of pharmacology and eliminating the confusion associated with the subject).
4 - I didn't do that many questions, maybe 500 in total (old Kaplan CD, A&LERT, the USMLE-CD). I didn’t take any USMLE courses.
5 - I took the NBME self-assessment test https://external1.nbme.org/nsasweb/servlet/mesa_m... about a week prior to exam. This identified my areas of weakness, and I would recommend doing this shortly before the real thing. The only downside is that they do not give out the answers :-(

Of course I felt horrible after having finished the exam, but everything ended up just fine. Good luck to anyone reading this!

Hi there,
I am a IMG and residing in Arlington TX now. I have done two years of research work (in Houston, Baylor College of Medicine, Neurosurgery) after finishing my Masters in Health Services Research in The Netherlands, which was after I had finished my medical school in Pakistan.
I am also a fine artist, and finally decided i need to pass my steps ASAP. I have three month to prepare for step 1, as I am staying with my family and have limited time. Is this enough time? I am single and do not work anymore, just wanting to study for my exams. I have all the HY books and BRS patho/physio. What do you advice me to read and is three months enough?
Please let me know, I really need some advice, my number is 713 870 7420 (my cell #). Or my email is medillustrator@hotmail.com

I would really appreciate your kind help.

sincerely,

Dr. Muhammed Raza Khan

Assuming that you have a good understanding from medical school and clinical practice, I think 3 months of review from HY and First Aid is enough. Just make sure you know First Aid cold. Take the NBME test or Kaplan tests to see what you can expect on USMLE.

Hi Acere,

I would read First Aid + high yields for facts that need to be memorized. Supplement with BRS or a textbook for topics that you're not clear on.

Although NBME claims that you should leave "test taking strategies at home", I had questions that could be cracked with the aid of more sophisticated multiple-choice strategies.

Good luck and don’t panic!

Thanks for the email. I will memorize and understand all facts in the First Aid for sure and high yield facts books.
It has been though 7 years since medical school. What text books did you work on? How long did you study and how long has it been since you last were in school or practice? Would appreciate your response.
Best of luck !

Muhammed
