I would have answered sooner./Thought you had a bunch of replies Factious ds.--Voluntary prodution of factitious symptoms (lies). The extreme course of multiple hospitalizations, and the pts seeming willingness to undergo extraordinary mutilating procedures. {pathological lying}possible criminal history Gain-sick role. *Its kinda funny ,picture a guy producing signs symptoms saying to himself-"I wanna be sick" and ready for every surgical procedure known to man (in an extreme case Malingering-obvious, recognizable enviormental goal in producing signs and symptoms. May seek hospitalization to secure $$$, avoid the police, avoid work ,or merely to obtain free room board for the night; but they always have some apparent end for their behavior. (Here usually$$ is the root to all evil. *These symptoms are intentionally produced compared to somatization. music lover--Judging by how you asked the q-you have insight on this.

Thanks - I just asked a psych at work about this today and she said both are "consciously" putting on the symptoms (as opposed to somatisation symptoms which are unconscious) but the factitious disorder sufferer is doing so to get emotional warmth etc, rather than material gain. Apparently people often had an experience in their childhood where they were in hospital for some reason and then later on try to re-create the feeling of love and being cared for they got as kids in hospital (not much hope of that in a public adult hospital, eh!) thanks for your help, h
