word of mouth really. US News and World Report ranks hospitals, and those rankings are roughly equivalent to where the programs really stand. Otherwise, you just have to latch onto a US doc and ask. It is all opinion anyway. In my opinion, all the top tier programs are roughly equivalent, anyway. Beware though, only apply to that very best if you have stellar scores and something to make you stand out (connections are the best!). Then again, if you don't try you won't know.

Hi retroviride!
Will you please clarify little bit about ....A connection... that you have mentioned? :lol: ....what would happen the ones like me doesn't have any connection at all here??????? Out of luck????? Is it really works in the US? How important is it really? If it's that impotant i perhaps should try harder to make connections instead of trying hard to get higher score???aahn? which is which? please ......just need some opinions .... interested in what others think on this!

I would say knowing a PD is best, but really, it can be anything. Big name US faculty to write LoR, who can then send personal e-mails/notes to PDs. Usually any senior faculty will have some sway with the PD at their program. I happen to have gone to undergrad with a chief resident at a program (connection). Not as good as faculty, but better than nothing!
No you don't NEED connections, but it is helpful!!! This is why US students don't need great scores (they have LoR from people PD trust) and why simply having great scores doesn't land IMGs great residencies
