I am an IMG and am hoping to get an H1 visa for the 2005 match. I am scheduled for my Step 2 CS on Novemeber 4 and am wondering if i will make it in time. I would like to know how long it takes to get the CS results, how long to get Ecfgmg certified and how long it takes to schedule a step 3 and wait for the results. I I have seen hospitals that say all you need for an H1 is to be scheduled to take the step 3 by interview, others on the other hand require results by the end of december, are most hospitals like this? Lastly, in the case i do not get an H1, would a J1 entail me coming back right after my residency or will i be able to finish my fellowships prior to coming back. Hope someone can help me with my long inquiry, thanks!

November 4 is step 2 cs,it means , you safely calculate 2 months for getting results , which is feb 4.Two more weeks for ecfmg certification and that is feb last week you can schedule step 3.The rule is you should take step 3 with in 3 months of booking the exam.If time permits (if slots are available) you can take that in March. If results take only 4 weeks , you will get your step 3 requirement by April!. Match results are out by March 15 ! H 1 b is a short cut for greencard.(permanent residency) J 1 is a student exchange visa .For 5 years. You can finish off even fellowship with this visa.None of the programmes are doing H1 for fellowships. So, if you are keen on doing fellowship , J 1 is right for you.You should go back to your native country or esle you can find a waiver job.Hardly any one goes to their native country for 2 years.Once this 2 years peiod is over, you can apply for H1 and then subsequntly for Green card also. Hope this info helps.if you have further questions, you can contact me.........

Hi, I have the same problem, the diff is that i made the CS in 9th October. Anyway its true 8-10 months for results + 2 weeks for certification + 2 weeks from the minute you schedule the exam until you can take it. Also i hope you seny your credentials because its minimum 10 weeks. good luck

To JayaKrishna hi your post was informative. i'm an IMG interested in fellowship in a pediatric subspeciality. are there any places offering fellowship to IMGs straight after ecfmg certification? or do u get into fellowship only after completing 3 years of residency? please let me know if there are any and how to go about it? thanks drvic PS: two months from 4th Nov is 4th Jan and not 4th Feb

to drvic Hi I'm an IMG urologist and I'm finishing my 2 year fellowship next June 2005. It's perfectly fine to do a felllowship here in the States w/o residency done here. You only need to be ECFMG certified. ( It's hard to get into them tough!!! ). In any rate...I guess peds shoud work the same way....My guess is that as long as you have a position offered to you, you will be fine.
