Kaplan Qbank USMLE

welp, the clock keeps ticking.

slept horribly last night because of some severe thunderstorms (which I usually sleep through). But being nervous and all, I'd prob wake up with a pin drop. Kept on waking up throughout the night.
So I'm a bit tired to say the least.

Plans for today, go over a bit more pharm and spend the rest of the day hitting pathology (FA then my weak parts in BRS).

so most of my friends have now taken the exam.

experiences have been more on the 1/4 - easy and straight ID questions, 1/2 are narrow it down to 2 answers, but don't know the exact answers, and 1/4 are the "where the hell did that come from variety" questions.

Most have thought that qbank questions were pickier than the real thing, and closer to the nbme exam.

man, I'm real nervous now!

Imbebo, you are gonna do just fine. Try not to stress out much tomorrow and probably do some light physical activity so you can sleep better at night. I wish a lot of concentration, determination and peace for your exam.

Exito!!

well

in less than 24 hours I'll be sitting for my exam, hell, I'll prob be done with my exam in about 27-28 hours...

Taking the day easy right now. Doing a few practice questions, going over the last min things to calm my nerves. Will prob hit the gym up after dinner for some light cardio and try to be in bed at a reasonable hour tonight.

Well,

its finally over and had a bit of time to reflect on the exam some.

I don't feel like I did overtly horrible about the exam, but I don't feel great about it either. There wasn't much there that I hadn't seen before, but many of the answers were just beyond my knowledge level. Things I probably would have known had I taken the exam right after my 2nd year of school rather than the key points sometimes highly in review books.

Things would be spelled out instead of given abbreviations. ie a granuloma would have been given as some sort of macrophage with epitheloid formation or something like that?

So its really hard to gage how I did. Things I did notice.
The questions were no where near as picky or as long as the qbank questions. I felt like the Appleton and Lange questions were a closer approximation to the test than qbank was. But topics covered in qbank were hy.
Closest example of the questions was the nbme exam.

I had a good deal of microbiology, some female path, endo path and phys and a good mix of mol cell and biochem.

Not too much in terms of pharm - maybe 4q per block at most.

behav was a 50-50 mix between biostats and behav questions. Not as many Doctor-patient relationship questions as I would have expected.

physio - some graphs, but some basic concepts too. But were things I had to take a min to think things through.

Histo was there, but incorporated into the other sections (physio, path, etc).

also I had a good deal of immuno on there. Might have been intermixed with the mol cell.

A lot of questions were integrations between subjects.

Very few questions were straight forward. Many questions required at least 1 hop of knowledge. LIke identifying the disease to know what drug is given to produce the side effect they were asking about.

this is what i can remember at the moment. I'll prob add/edit this later tonight or in the few days. I imagine I got more than a few typos or omissions in here (hands are freeeeeezing).

Hi Mr. lmbebo,

I noticed that you saiid on another forum that alot of the things on the exam were things that was learned in the classroom and not a review course. That being said, do you think that studying from the Kaplan set of books and just studying hardcore throughout 5th semester and taking it soon after is more beneficial than to take time off afterwards and do it the way that you did? What materials did you use to study for the exam? I just plan on using the Kaplan set and using the BRS books that I used throught that basic sciences.
I'm sure that you more than passed by looking at your assessment that you posted earlier of all your subject areas.
Thanks

HI IMBEBO THANKS FOR SHARING THE EXPERIENCE.I WISH YOU GET A VERY GOOD SCORE...

GOOD LUCK!!!

  #162

hey thanks

nabeya : Its kinda hard to study hardcore through miami sometimes, just because you're out of the island and can do things for once.
If you can study through 5th, thats great. It'll definatly help on that final exam. But if you're able to study through 5th like you want, then I guess try and arrange for the exam to be like 4 weeks or so afterwards.

With me, we ended 5th in november. I would have tried, under you're idea, to set my window from december to febuary (which I did do) and set my test date about a month after I got home.

Materials
goljan, kaplan biochem, some made redic simple and HY micro (hawley was so key on my test. some people complained in my class about her, but she was on the money with preparing us).
I also went through BRS physio. All this was done before I got to Falcon.

At falcon I used the falcon notes. I didn't have much time to go over anything once I left falcon.

Tried to read as much of FA as I could. I suggest, if you haven't already, when you read you're books and find something of note, write it down in FA so you can quickly review FA the week before.

I guess try and save you're questions till about 2-3 weeks before hand.

I dunno. You'll figure out whats best for you.

good luck

nice score. Congrats. How did you do in comparison with the shelf exams that you took in basic sciences? And did you ever bother studying for any of the shelf exams that you took and just take them cold?

  #172

on my shelf exams.
I took all basic science shelf exams except pathology, micro and into to clinical medicine.

On all shelf exams (histo, biochem, neuro, anatomy, physio, and behavioral) I averaged like a 73 score.
On pharm, I didn't prepare for it all, wasn't allowed to cause I didn't know what I was taking until it was given to me. I got a 62 on it. But it was towards the end at I no longer cared how well I did.

I studied for the biochem, neuro and physio shelfs. I just went over the behavioral drugs for the behav shelf.
