howdy ya'll. well today is a bit frustrating. A bit sleepy this morning. Got a late call last night from a friend and then just never got myself in bed till 1 am. Anyways, I ended up leaving my headphones at home, so I can't listen to goljan at all. Was planning on that today. Thought about doing some qbook questions, but i grabbed MMRS instead. And some how HY biochem ended up in backpack. So, I wasn't planning on using MMRS much because I have my own notes, which correlate with HY Micro. But I was going to do the basics of bacteria out of MMRS because when we did it I put a lot of notes in there. So I've read the first 3 chapters. Probably not extremely important for step1, but its some of the basics I had forgotten about gram + versus gram - species, etc. rest of the day, not really sure what I'll be doing. I've got my goljan notes with me, BRS path, MMRS, HY biochem and FA. Probably end up reading my goljan notes.

write a bit now, might still accomplish more later. After I wrote what I did, I did some IV qbank questions. I have 48 left. Mostly in the 64% range (as is my overal score), a few spikes into the 70s. I started reading cvs from goljan when I decided I still didn't understand murmurs and what not, even after listening to goljan's lecture on it. So I went and found the lilly book on cvs pathophys and photocopied the relevant chapter on it (~ 12 pages). its helped some, but I need to go over it again. I miss almost every question related to murmurs with their clinical presentation (ie radiation, intensity, shape, when they occur, etc). I ended up reading 2 chapters from HY biochem for the hell of it. chapters 4 and 5. THink that might be it. edit finished IV qbank tonight. Ended on a high note, I think. I think when you exclude the few occassions I got a low 50% score, my average tends to be in the high 60s. Today I averaged 69%. (trying to look at the silver lining )

Hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable weekend. Even for those of us who don't celebrate christmas. its been a long quiet weekend here. It snowed (flurries), its been a few years since we last saw snow in South Texas Really didn't do anything but sleep, watch movies, eat, and excercise. So it was nice and relaxing. Ran a few errands to prepare for falcon. So I believe this will be my last week of indepedent study. My goal, finally finish listening to goljan. COntinue my work in pharm and micro. I've got 5 days of studying. I would like to work on my physio qbank. I doubt I will get anything done friday night though sat (new years eve). Must be at a wedding on sunday.... and monday I leave for Dallas. So today Id like to get through the rest of the heme lectures. THese are the only lectures I've never listened to at least once. I've run through the rest at least twice during the course of my basic science studies (systemic portion). I also doubt that I will be able to maintain my diary through my time in falcon. The occassional update I imagine, but not a daily thing. It'll be more of a fast paced marathon for me. P.S. I had my first bad meal at the Cheesecake factory, crusted chicken romano is a no no

so I'm starting to doze off listening to Goljan talk about SCD, so I decided to get up and walk to the bookstore and get a red bull to wake me up. So as I'm about to enter the bookstore one of the campus cops stops to ask me a ton of questions like "are you a student here? me - "no", "do you work here", "no", "what are you doing here?", "none of your business", etc.. I just walked off and went into the bookstore. Found that they had the 2005 FA, so having a problem with books, I quickly bought it. I'm going to compare the two a bit later today when I can see if there are any differences. I can still return it. Then as I was leaving the bookstore drinking my red bull, the cop that gave me problems was pointing me out to someone else.

as you can probably tell, I'm having some issues sitting down and concentrating. but I did flip through some of FA. here are some of the changes I wrote down. There are many. Superficial changes 4 less pages of material additional review of books/notes; still doesn't give anything about falcon. No longer black sections. Everything is done via gray shading. Easier to write over. Removed "Notes" page at the end of each section. Started with Physio removed A LOT of the GI physio section. removed the sections concerning gluc absorptio, pancreatic exocrine secretion, pancreatic enzyme, and pancreatic functions. they split the table of GI products into products and hormones added a section to pulmoney physio concerning pulm circ revised some section, ie the section hormones acting on kidney, is now a diagram. Showing the information in terms of the site of action. added something about changes in renal fxn. they seem to cover more info about electrolyte disturbances/changes in most sections. added WPW syndrome to cvs physio removed the peripheral blood smears page in path. thats just a short list of stuff I have noticed. Some diagrams have been changed and are easier to understand. Some sections have been expanded, ie the amyloid box in path. Its hard to say if its better, but definatly has differences. I think I'll be keeping it though. I've only thumbed through the other sections, so I can't comment on those sections. But I'll add this, they seemed to like the Rapid Review series overall. Goljan's was only given a B+. but they ranked the Micro highly (best of the series?) and the Pharm too I think. Hope this helps some.

Hi Imbebo Thanks for the info. What edition are you comparing FA 2005 to? I've got the 2003 edition. Thanks a lot, and good luck with the studying! Moc

Hi Imbebo, Thanks a lot for your input about the new 2005 FA. I'm debating whether or not to go out and buy the new version since I have the 2003 version. Sigh....more money towards passing this exam. :? Happy studying to you! pinkangel

I think the decision depends on how much effort/notes you've put into your current version of FA and when you take the exam. I justified it to myself because I dont take the exam for another 2 months and I could hardly read the notes I did put into FA (tried too put too much in - bad handwriting too). So I'm gonna use mine and just put qbank notes in it since I had yet to start it.

well, I didn't sleep much last night because I was a bit too excited for today I think. I'll be going to see the San Antonio Spurs play the Phoenix Suns tonight. <--huge spurs fan. So I was a bit slow getting up and getting out of the house this morning. I've now finished all the Heme lectures (took awhile). Thought all I had left was female/breast. Turns out that I'm still missing more than few lectures! I have Hepatobilliary/Pancreas, Respiratory, and Skin. All in addition to female/breast.... I basicaly need to have these done before I leave for my review. Since I'm taking notes while I listen (about 2-3 hours per lecture), it takes me a long time to get through them all. Once I do this I can do to just listening to the lectures which is much quicker. So I think I'l finish prob 1.5 hours of Resp lectures by the time I leave today. Won't get much else done though. Tommorow finish Resp, move onto Hepatobilliary, maybe get gyn in.

evenin folks. Well, I'm in a great mood right now. Just got back from the Spurs game. Spurs kicked the #$^$$%#$!@!#@! out of Phoenix. Awesome game. Anyways. What I accomplished today. Day 3 lectures of 1-> 3 hematology. Mostly coag and bloodbank. Got through the 1st hour of Respiratory. Did 50 questions from qbank - 76%. night all.

Hey Imbebo, 460 is above passing - I have to summon up the courage to take that test again. The last time I took it was in Nov right after my car accident. I will take it some time during the first week of January. Hope to get at least a 400. At this point, that looks like a Godsend to me. Glad to hear your studies are going well. You are on the right track. Keep going my friend! You will taste victory on your exam day. Thanks for posting in my diary. You're right. Deep breaths. I need to remember not to let this exam overtake me. Happy New Year's to you and your loved ones. pinkangel

hello everyone. been absent for the past few days with new years eve and the flu. So I haven't done much of anything except sleep and force gallons of oj down my gullet. I leave tommorow for my review course. So I don't know how often I will be checking this board or updating my diary. Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has read and helped me in my preperation thus far. Good luck and best wishes.

Hey Imbebo, Just wanted to wish you a speedy recovery from the nasty flu. Seems like so many of my USMLE friends here are getting sick with it. You're making great progress, I have no doubt you will pass this exam with an awesome score. Just get some rest and have some nice warm chicken soup and the oj as you have been doing. All the best, pinkangel

Hi everyone. started my review course. its not exactly what I was expecting, but its forcing me to go over topics I would have an otherwise hard time doing on my own. So I have a little bit better of a foundation in behav now. Went through one of the qbook tests and scored 75%. Noted most of my problems with the pyschotic medications. Feeling better and sleep deprived now Anyways, hope everyone is doing well and working hard.

Hi all, thanks for the hellos and what not. been a long week here. Ran through anatomy and Neuroanatomy. Trying to do too much at times. I've got 27 days left on qbank and like 1600 questions left todo!. Course is getting progressively better with each round. We just started Physio today. Was a good review, but a boring subject (muscle physio, some ans, etc). Tommorow is a bigger day with cardiac physio. Qbank has been so so for me. 60% overall. Doing a mix of random blocks and then subject oriented questions. Aside from my abismal 60% on anatomy, doing pretty well on the subject exams. random has been between 55 to 60%.... Not much else to report. Keeping myself very busy. Hope everyone is doing well and continuing to study hard.
