HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

  #42

its been awhile since Ive done anything.

crazy weekend with thanksgiving, wedding, weird library hours and whole bunch of other social engagements I tried to weazle out of it but failed.

Anyways, today after a brunch I had to attend to, I was able to sneak out to the library for the first time since wednesday. By saturday I was already feeling guilty about my lack of studying.

Today I managed to finish transcribing the audio to the general pathology section of goljan and I've copied my notes into his notes through most of fluid and hemodynamics.

I read through neoplasia in FA

I also did DNA/RNA out of FA, did chapters 1 and 2 in kaplan biochem.

I did 52 questions in IV qbank.

not sure what else I did today, but at least I felt like I accomplished something.

wow imbebo 8)
you have done a very good job.....keep it up!!!!

happy studying!!!!

Hey Imbebo
You are really doing great..best thing..52 Qs from IV QBANK 8) Wow..its really an accomplishment..and a real inspiration for me...( bec.I feel so lazy about doing Qs wink )..
Keep Up..

thanks.

long day today, in more ways than 1.

slept like crap last night, but I still forced myself to get up and get to the library by 9 am.

I found out that I still had a ways to go in the fluid dynamics chapter in goljan in terms of copying over my notes. So that took me till lunch.

After lunch I read chapters 3,4,5,6 and 10 in kaplan biochem.

After dinner, I read some of the corresponding info in FA.

I started (have 3 pages of notes still to copy over) on the nutrition notes to my goljan notes.

After i got too tired from writing all day, I did some more IV qbank questions. I went down about 10 percentage points from what I had been averaging of late (65 to 55). I screwed up a block of questions concerning an abdominal aortic aneurysm and then some questions related to irritable bowel disease. Mostly pharm related questions and some path related questions.
Surgery for aneurysm is at 6cm dilation, not 10cm. I think the person is dead by 10cm....
oh well.

I've completed 25% of IV qbank now. Averaging a 62%.

Oh, and hit the gym for about 90 mins tonight. Felt gooooooooood. Have too much pecan pie to work off now.

plan for tommorow.
1. finish nutrition notes
2. do about 1/2 of the neoplasia notes (maybe finish it at night if i get enough done during the day).
3. read chapters 11, 12, 13 - energy metabilism, glycolysis and PDH, and TCA + Ox Phos. + FA
4. Start, time permitting --> chap 9 - AA, Proteins and Enzymes, Chap 9 Hormones (I think I should be able to get through this).

prob do some questions later at night.
(gym?)

Rest of the week - would like to finish biochem by wednesday, do genetics on thursday and friday and hit up the HY moll cell bio too in those days.

Saturday - I'll prob spend the day re-reading my biochem FA + notes I make, and the goljan notes.
Sunday - begin Physio. I'll be doing Physio systemically with goljan systemic path.

thanks for the support and good luck to all!

wow imbebo.....
doing great work....really inspired by ur studying

keep it up my friend!!!!!

  #47

Hi Imbebo

Yeah, buddy, things are definitely starting to move! And your Qbank results seem decent. I haven't looked over most topics once yet, but decided to test myself yesterday. So I did the Online Blackwell USMLE exam, and though it's meant to be slightly easier than the real thing I only got 46%. Gulp.

Keep running,
Moc

post this now and then hit the gym.

got up a bit late this morning, was really tired from yesterday. Made it here by 10am. Finished all the nutrition notes by lunch.

Read chapters 8,9 (Proteins, AAs, Hormones, Enzyme kinetics), 11, 12, 13 (energy metabolism, glycolysis, TCA and PDH...Ox Phos) out of kaplan.

Did like 80% of my neoplasia transcribing, so it should only take me 20-30 ,mins to finish that up tommorow.

Because of time constraints I only did 31 questions in IV qbank. Got 71% right. Which was suprising. I didn't do so hot on the GIT questions concerning the adenocarcinoma (had been a stronger subject of mine in the past).

Only didn't accomplish reading the chapter on gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis (on purpose) = chap 14.

plan for tommorow -
1.read chap 14 through 18? - basically read all of the kaplan chapters on biochem.
2. finish neoplasia notes
3. go back and add all the sig notes from kaplan into my FA (haven't yet..)
4. BSS and/or qbook questions on biochem.

mocto - don't worry about the score. Still early and its not the best predictor.

just keep studying!

you are doing a real great job daily...inspired by ur work!!!

happy studying!!!

  #50

hey

slightly less productive day.

I finished my neoplasia notes.
I did finish reading all of the biochem chapters in kaplan, but I really wasn't grasping some of the concepts or remembering what I was reading. I struggled with the stuff during the course as well. FA, purine/pyrimidines, glucogeneo, etc

so I think I might have to spend a bit of every day to look over some of this stuff, so i learn it a bit better.

I kinda hit a wall in the middle of the day.
(got tired of reading about biochem).

so I sat down and did some some more IV qbank questions.

Did them in smaller blocks today, but did 65 questions overall.
25 - 48% right

-- missed a whole set of questions concerning cruetzfield jakob disease (missed the diagnosis so all my other answers were off. I thought it was the variant cruetzfield jakob). --

20 - got 70% right
20 - got 75% right

overall, I think its around 63/4% ?

starting copying over the goljan HY biochem into the FA biochem section (hard to find the space ...)
I think I did the first 3 pages of his HY section.

I think for tommorow. instead of starting genetics like I had planned, Im going to start on physio. I need a bit of a change of pace on the subject material.

I'll do genetics after I do physio now. Hopefully I can knock out physio in about 5-7 days with related goljan systemic path as well (this will be the slower part).

I also read the first 12 pages of tommyk's HYs, but I dont think I will continue to do so anymore till closer to the end, if at all.
I think its too much and not a whole bunch of time to do it in really. And its all mixed up together.

would be amazing if someone had the time to make them into a real online q/a thing. Not the method employed by usmle.ca, it would really be a kick a$* study tool

but overall, I think I'll have to spend some time towards the end of this month going over biochem again. I think its one of my weaker subjects.
That along with genetics and anatomy (according to kaplan qbank breakdown - all below 60%, or 50% for anatomy).

So overall, while I accomplished most of what I wanted todo today, I don't think much of it was enriching.

  #51

mid-day now. Copied over some more of the stuff from goljan HY to FA for biochem - long process.
still have to get through the disorders and AAs (good 4-5 pages).

Sat down and organized my time in terms of path and phys.

I think this is how I'll break it up
Dec 2 - Cell Physio Kaplan I-1,2, II-1,2,3, IV-1,2
Goljan Path Musculoskeletal + Heme 1/2

Dec3rd - ANS Physio - stars chap 2 or BRS (need to see the brs again to see what its like).
Path Heme #2

Dec 4th - Neurophysio stars/brs
goljan cns path, start cardio path 1/2

Dec 5th - cardio phys kaplan - III-1,2, V-1,2
Path - cardio path 2/2

Dec 6th - Resp Phys kaplan - VI-1,2,3,4
Path - goljan all sections

Dec 7th - Renal Phys - leaning towards Stars on this (liked her on this subject)
Path - corresponding chapter

Dec 8th - A/B physio - kaplan
Skin Path

Dec 9th - GIT physio - Kaplan (seems short and small)
Path - GIT and Hepato/pancreatic path (already listened to GIT section and took notes)

Dec 10th - Endocrine - Kaplan IX-1,2,3,4,6,7
Path - endocrine path

Dec 11th - Reproductive Path and extra reg endo sections IX-5,8,9,10,11
Male and female path

If I finish a section quicker than another, then I'll start next day. I would enjoy finishing this up by the 9th if I could.

A bit freaked out about the rest of my month though. November fly by so quickly and I really didn't get as much done as I had hoped too.

So I decided to try and plan out a more realistic goal for the rest of the month

Dec 13th and 14th - genetics
Dec 15th-18/19th - Pharm (debating if I should do more than just FA or not)
Dec 19/20-21/22 - Behav Science (2 or 3 days)
Dec 23/24-27/28 - Micro and Immuno
Dec 28/29-29 - Anatomy/Histo/Embryo through FA, watch dissection review from basic sciences and go over my HY list from basic sciences
Dec 29/30 - Neuroanatomy
Dec 31 - NBME exam #1
Jan 1st - after lunch - Kaplan Exam?/dunno
Jan 2 - ???
Jan 3 - Feb 18th = Falcon Review; take NBME #2 somewhere in there?
Feb19th - Feb 25th = Final Review of FA
Feb 26th - Exam

Im trying to keep heavy on the bigger parts of the exam. Path, Physio, Pharm and Micro

I feel I can maybe gain a day with Micro if I swtich to the HY micro (used it in basic sciences and taught by author), so Im familiar with it.
Immuno - is a toss up. Didn't get a great background in it.

would appreciate some comments about my plan. Thanks.

Hi Imbebo,
From your schedule,I can conclude that u r in fast revision mode now 8) its really good..so u r revising from same books whatever u used before ....rt ? Because I heard that near exam its not a good idea to study from any new source ??Your NBME timing is right ! ..so,u will have enough time to improve anything ..if u need..but ,really I hope ...u will come out in flying colors D .How is Falcon Course ?....I think, any course maybe good until u are consistent with your studies and keeps u motivated ! Your exam date is set..so,don't try to postpone it...I mean if u think about postponing...u will always have a thought in mind and maybe u will not finish the revision in time...so,26 feb is Final...Thats it P
Good Luck in advance...and just keep up..
u r doing great..

Hi, thanks

Falcon doesn't start until the 4th of January I believe. I am trying to go over most of the material before I go (1st reading) and have the coverage by Falcon as the 2nd reading.

I'm locked in to take it by the end of febuary (a. don't want to spend another $650? for a new time window and b. school is forcing us to take it by then). Although some extra time at the back end wouldn't hurt smiling face

I think I'll only be doing FA that week before, FA and questions out the wazooo.

Done what I had wanted in Physio today (a few issues with Muscle Physio), gonna read that section in STARs, didn't like the kaplan explanation at all.

Still have to get to Goljan. Forgot my notebook with part of my heme notes ... which was slated for today as well...

P.S. thanks for the encouragement.

  #54

so today

50 questions IV - 60% right, screwed up another demantia/CNS block of questions. 7 straight misses. Seems to be a very poor area of mine.

got through most of what there was with musculoskeletal goljan audio. Didn't finish transcribing it to my notes, but I listened to the rest at the gym and part of the heme lectures there.

did read part of the RBC disorders, how much there was ....

Did all that I wanted too in Physio.
guess the rest is written already. Night everyone.

  #55

bleh

i took last nght off after not really accomplshing too much.

I read ANS physio yesterday, read over some of the corresponding chapters in FA in terms of ANS drugs during lunch.

Did some practice problems in BSS with physio and biochem.

Did NBME #1 this morning because I really didn't feel like studying today.

I got a 380 :|, thought I'd be in the 420/430 area.

performance profile was a bit disappointing though in certain areas.

  #56

Imbebo -How do you plan on battling renal and neuro, many including myself are weak in those areas??

Maybe we should do an organ based./"It started with a pronephros, mesonephros and metanephros" and then try to take it to the end?

not quite sure....

sad part is, I really dont feel like studying anymore today, nor do I think my current approach is really working.

  #58

hi imbebo
dont worry.you have still 2 more months of time.you can improve a lot....try to be more perfect in those u r weak...like renal,blood,pathology...
do lot of questions....you will definetely pick up.
take a break for today and be refreshed for tomorrow.

  #59

Imbebo-We are in a very similar boat, taking a 1 day break is not too bad. As said just pick up tommorrow. {I saw you on another forum}

well

I got up early today, 8 am, but I didn't get to the library until after lunch. Didn't feel very motivated.

Was very frustrated studying today. I was doing CNS pathology, but then got into doing Neuroanatomy, histo and embryo (not very much of the latter 2).

Seems like Im relearning all this stuff instead of brushing on it.
Remember knowing Neuroanatomy like the back of my hand, now I struggle with it big time.

Worked a few BSS questions in biochemistry, didn't do very well at all.

Finally gave up and came home.

Did 50 questions on IV qbank. Still getting the same average.
