Kaplan Qbank USMLE

Its a bit premature maybe. I dont really start studying so hard until mid november when I get out of my advanced intro to clinical sciences program.

I'll have about 6 solid weeks of free time to study plus I'll be taking a review course this winter. Aiming to take the exam in the last few days of febuary (wish it was a skip year ..) so prob the 24/25/26/28. Dont think its open on sundays.

I've seen a lot of people go through this for over the past year. So its my turn soon enough. I was ready to start over the summer, but still had to finish my 2nd year of school. Now that I've been off for awhile, its really hard to get focus and motivated.

Optomistic goals this week.
I've got access to Qreview until mid feb. So I want to start with IV qbank and save the qbank till I get closer to the real deal.

My goal is to get through 150-200 questions week. Start day 1 of goljan path.

Id be interested to here what people have to say. At least on how I should focus. I know I need a solid foundation in path and I think goljan will help give me that. Ive got almost all his material. (Im a book junkie). At home I got the kaplan 2001 lecture series. Not sure if I should use them at all. FA 2004.

Also wonder if I should take notes on what questions I do. THose I get wrong only? Or right and wrong. Or do I bother at all?

thanks in advance.

last night I did 29 questions out of IV qbank. Did alright, a few things I noticed I had to go back over, like anatomy and pharm (eek).

spent the day reviewing for our group discussion here in school about immune disorders (i basically did autoimmune disorders). Not sure what I was supposed to go over though. We'll see.

Maybe tonight i'll get around to goljan or try and prepare a bit better for tommorow's lecture.

another day.

I started goljan from day 1. I transcribed what he was saying onto a notebook since it helps me keep focused with what he was teaching.

Did 25 questions in IV qbank. Got 44% right. All of the path questions were right though. Had probs with the behav and pharm. Im not too concerned with the % right though. A) Im just starting and haven't reviewed this topics at all. B) A lot of the questions I did miss I had narrowed down to my answer and the right answer. So its a matter of going back to refresh these topics in some of these instances.

I was contemplating if I should record myself reading First Aid into my mp3 player to listen to at a later time.

44%for the first time is not a bad score i believe.
all the best for your preparation.

wholeheartedly agree with kiranadi best of luck...
keep the tempo high give it ur best shot...u have a ;ot of time and used in a right manner wud do wonders...

  #6

thanks.

Gonna start back up again today. Took a mini vacation wth some friends to Disney world for the past 2 days. Read through parts of First Aid on the way back while I was awake.

Got to read up on valvular heart disease today for school and then plan to continue on the first part of goljan.

just out of curiosity, what dates are ya'll looking at for taking step 1?

  #7

spent the day working on some school stuff and finished cell injury part 1.

update long time coming.

Been busy with practicing my physical exam techniques for school. Few problems here and there I need to work on (like remembering to take the man's blood pressure!)
only big item I missed, but only worth 1 point any-who.

Started up again and did some reading on endocrine disorders. Meaning I got through 1/2 of the goljan audio, read some stuff in the washington manual of therapeutics (for school).

Ive noticed that it does help a little to read a book such as the washington manual. It presents items with what to look for, how to diagnose, and the treatment and treatment options. I then started pasting some stuff I thought was pertinent from the book into my 1st aid.

Hopefully I can start to get some more down. I'll have about a week off next week to really get through systemic path through goljan (for my final exam in this course).

Everything depends on how well I did on my case write up ( h&p). A good enough grade will exempt me from writing another one (big pain in the ...) and leave me with more free time to study.

PS

wondering if anyone has used the USMLE Step 1 Secrets book and could tell me if they recommended it or not?
2nd. I believe that I am deficient in my Immunology and wondering if anyone could recomment a book for it. All I know is the HY Immuno and the Javetz (didn't really appeal to me).
I have access to the rapid review Micro+ Immuno. Would the immuno section in there cover my needs? or would it be too brief?

There is also this website

good to see you again with this dairy. smiling face smiling face
happy studying!!!!

  #10

thanks smiling face

I got my paper back. I was given a "satisfactory", so all I need to do now is a case presentation with powerpoint (need to learn how to use it first) and Im not responsible for another case write up (big yay!), so Im left with more time to concentrate on my own studies which can double for the final exam.

  #11

well tonight I spent the night trying to organize myself and set some goals. some achievable, the rest Im not sure how achievable they are.

I have it written down right now. I'll be transfering it over to my laptop in the next few days I hope.

I also tried to get my sources down to 1 book per subject for the most part.

My biggest issues are still
1. source for immuno
2. source for genetics (robbins chapter on genetics?)
3. which goljan do I use for path (stars, rapid review, or the notes[not the hy notes] out with goljan's audio or even path secrets)
4. How many questions should I aim to do everynight.
5. how much time to devot to subjects like Anat+histo+embryo

  #13

did some goljan hematology
read chapter 1 of the RR immuno section and added some stuff to 1st aid in immuno.

  #14

did 55 questions in IV qbank tonight
did better than last time. 58% overall.

Showig some rust though from not studying some stuff recently. Most noticably in Microbiology. I knew my bacterial causes of bacteria better and the differences between strep pneumo and what not.

I missed those questions that had I been preparing for this stuff right after I left the island I'd prob get them right now.

poop!

oh well. Didn't show a glaring deficit in any subject, but I didn't show that I was strong in any subject either except pharm which was weird. I missed 2 out of 14. Last test I took in qbank I missed 12 out of 14.

weird stuff.

  #15

days not over, but I still have to do some Physical exam practicing tody.

I've started GI path from goljan and read the corresponding section out of this Fundamentals of Clinical Medicine book. Its not a bad book at all.

Incorporates the PE finding, Differential Diagnosis, etc.

  #16

how is it going on imbebo?
when are you planning to take the exam?
see u later
bye

  #17

Hi,

Im looking at late feb (25,26,28)
right at the end of that window. Right now its just a bit harder to put any time in for the step studying. Looks like I have my physical exam final this friday or saturday, and I have a case presentation to write that is due in a week and a half.

bleh!

  #18

another slow day.

got through another lecture of goljan on gi disorders.
starting research a topic for school, have a presentation to do on that.

Will have my final physical exam this weekend, so i wont have much free time to post on anything else. But at least I get it out early and can concentrate on studying for the final exam (which = doing goljan as well).

  #19

its beeeeeeeeeeeen a long time since i've posted to this but i haven't forgotten about it.

been very busy finishing up my school term. im now on my usmle study break.

i plan to start on wednesday. ive spent the past 2 days driving home, very tired now. tommorow is my erands day. trying to get my own computer at home up and running. it hasn't been used in 2 years (so its old) and a few of the parts are no longer working or missing pieces (wireless card).

plan to start with goljan wednesday morning.

hey,
thanks for the reply

dont want to be fighting for time with my parents smiling face

anyways,
ive got q review (iv qbank and q bank) - ends mid feb
bss (all 5 books).
i also get access to the exammaster qbank with falcon reviews. in jan-feb

not sure how to integrate the bss into my daily studies since i plan on doing it subject based rather than system based like bss is.

if time permits, i might sign up for the physio qbank as well me thinks.

not sure.

  #22

hi imbebo
GOOD SOURCES OF QUESTIONS!!!!
well even i'm doing the BSS series.at the back of each book the Q are divided into subject wise...like they are divided the Q given at the front into subject wise.just have a look at it 8) .i think this will help you in doing the Q subject wise. 8)

hope this helps you
happy studying
goodnite

  #23

even though Im doing goljan/path right now. should I just do the path questions from bss?

  #24

from ur dairy i understand that u r stll in ur first reading.so my advice is that you can do them subject wise.

my previous msg was regarding ur querry as how to do the BSS Q subject wie......but if u feel more comfortable doing randomly...then go ahead.

hope i helped you!!!!!

  #25

well was hoping to do topic specific questions with bss and random questions with qbank.

registered with prometric this morning.

date of exam = 2/26/05
