Can anyone briefly describe the malaria cycle naming some different stages at different times in the body.

http://www.cdc.gov/malaria/biology/life_cycle.htm http://www.niaid.nih.gov/publications/malaria/lif... It is most important to speciate M. falciparum, as it has the highest mortality. This is done by experienced microscopists (I am not one of these, but one of our techs spent two years exclusively in parasitology at the Cleveland Clinic). The appearance of the stages seen will hopefully decide which type is the infecting agent. Ultimately, this call can be be shunted to pathology, so all you budding pathologists - bone up on malaria smears :-). There is a good reference below: http://www.rph.wa.gov.au/labs/haem/malaria/diagno...

Here is a brief cycle: sporozoite --schizont(contains 1000's of merozoites)--merozoites can invade the rbc's. variations:1) sporozoites can turn into the dormant stage hypnzoite (viviax and ovale) in the liver 2) merozoites can invade rbc and form a gametocyte. 3) A merozoite can allso form a schizont The merozoite is somewhat multipotent *Once again this is a simple and brief outline of a Sporozoan with a complex life cycle.
