Hi everyone! I'm a sophomore at UST-FMS. I'm still deciding whether I should take the MLE or not. I have some questions for you guys. Someone please answer! I really don't plan on staying in the States forever, but I definitely want to train there or abroad. I'm thinking of Oncology as a specialization. Would you know about Filipinos only training in the US or other countries? Would taking the MLE be worth it? Coz from what I know it's around $2000, right? If anyone can shed light on these topics, pls email me: abby_md@yahoo.com. Thanks so much! To everyone who will be taking the MLE, good luck!!!!

hi im from up 2003. i already took the steps (which I barely made it) and i'm still here in LA right now. i applied for the match this year and I had 2 interviews which are pretty much good. they would rank me highly but the problem is that I failed step 2 CS. I took it again and I'm now heading back home cause my visa will expire soon... i totally crapped my steps history. i barely made it in step 2 ck (77) and failed the CS. right now m waiting for the results of my retake. my plan is to go through the match next year and practice for a while in manila. since I totally screwed up in my exams, i think my chances are getting slimmer and slimmer. i am opening myself to other possibilies in my medical career my questions for you guys: 1. how do you become a medical assistant? do you apply for that? 2. m thinking of getting into graduate school if no hospital likes me. i hope you could give me some advice about this? 3. any more suggestions for my career just in case i end up jobless again after the 2006 match? thank you. i may sound a little desperate and lost. believe me, i am.

hi leptospira... it depends on a lot of factors. Some programs require only step 1 when you submit your application. Anywaya, a lot of things are considered in your application like (1)the year you graduated (they prefer graduates of <5yrs) (2) your visa status (mas madali for them syempre kung may permanent resident visa ka or US citizen ka) (3) the type of program you are applying to (some programs are more competitive than others) (4) the type of hospital you are applying to (university programs are MUCH more competitive than community or rural hospitals) of course the rest of your application packet will also play a factor. sometimes a good personal statement, a good CV... it all depends on what the program is looking for, if you can catch their attention. and then, there's the interview part-- a lot of people look good on paper, but they can be complete a**holes. I think programs also look for people who will fit in with the rest of the team, you know. Someone with a great personality, someone who will be a pleasure to work with... there's also the matter of persistence during the application process Sometimes, it's also a matter of luck Good luck!

thanks monstermd...i only got an 82 on my step 1...was rly worried bout it...m in an internal med residency program on my first yr while reviewing for my step1...i guess that what did it...my plan is to take my step2 after i graduated from my program...which would be like 2 more yrs...i still dont have a visa kasi...my husband has a visa already n he's reviewing for step1 na...a lot of my friends are taking nursing courses together with the mle so that they vould support themselves or their families while being there in the us waiting for a match...what do u think about that? and would my graduating from an internal rsidency program be a plus when applying for a match there in the us?

i thought it would be a waste of my time going through all the hard work of an im program in the Phils if it wasnt going to count for much anyways when i go to the US. i will still have to do it all over again. (I did read in some other forum here of one pedia resident who skipped 2nd year and was promoted from 1st yr to 3rd yr; the said resident had already finished peds residency in her home country) so i didnt apply to an IM program as I had always planned, instead, I just devoted my time to studying. I enrolled in a kaplan center-based review for step 1, and did full time review. I think, in retrospect, that it was one of the best decisions I made. Kaplan helped me a lot, and what I learned there carried me through even in step 2 CK. But then again that's just me... What may work for me may not work for you, so I leave it to your better judgement. By the way, is your husband a US citizen or permanent resident?

Congratulations for securing a position, incre_hulk! That must feel awesome, finally having that sense of security that yes, I will have someplace to go in July... I, on the other hand, might have to depend solely on the Match. Programs here in CA are just too competitive I guess, and nobody is offering any pre-matches. But I'm putting my trust in the system and hoping that it will reward me Wish me the best of luck!
