Hello everyone. UST grad here batch 2001. Took Step 1 and 2 this year, passed both exams, scheduled to take the CS this November...but lo and behold....my visa application got denied!!! Cancelled my CS sked and hoping for a refund. Gonna start Derma Residency here on January and then apply again for a visa after residency for fellowship in the US. If you wanna ask advice or anything regarding the USMLE's, drop me an e-mail. I'll try to answer ASAP. Good luck to everyone applying for their visa, pray you don't get assigned to window 10!!!

I am from New York, studying for step 1, planning to take it next Jan-Feb. Anyone from New York city?

  #28

hi lander,
just curious, since u already passed ur step1 & 2,
why r u gong to do Derm. in PI? Is it bec. u can't come here in US yet?
Keep on trying to get a visa so you can have ur residency here. GL

  #29

I figured since Derm is what I really love, and Derm is very competitive in the US, it would be "easier" for me to have residency here first and then go there for fellowship or start derm residency again. I think it would look good in my credentials if I had prior Derm research which is emphasized in the program where I am in right now. My plan is to probably take the CS during residency while I'm on vacation, that way I can present papers that I am currently employed and have something to get back into. After residency here, I plan to get into a certificate program in Singapore or Thailand or if lucky enough, Australia and do some more derm research while preparing my papers for the ERAS. What a plan!!!!

hi lander,
is the CS ur referring to is the CSA? If it is then , sure it's one of the reqs. for residency here. STEP 3 tha,t u can take while doing US residency or there are some states that would allow u to take it even w/o US residency yet.
Anyway, GL with ur plan.

:?

  #44

Hey chill! No need to get all CAPS about it! :?

I would just like to know how to go about applying for the program (e.g. IM). I am now preparing for the CS. Should I start doing my ERAS now or wait until I pass the CS? How do I select a good hospital offering the program? How do I know which hospitals are accepting IMGs? Right now I am still in Pinas. I'm hoping to get into a good program by 2006. Please help me on those "how-to-start" stuff...

Sorry if I got you all keyed-up.

Thanks for taking time! smiling face

there, small case..happy? grin

you can't do ERAS now for 2006. you have to wait until july to start that. just get all your stuff ready though (LOR's, Dean's Letter, Transcripts, Personal Statement--did you get one from that nice collins guy?) you don't have to wait for your CS result to start ERAS, but it's good to have that done by september when programs start downloading your application. you'll get more interviews that way.as far as finding the programs, many programs in the mid-atlantic region are very IMG friendly. i don't know your usmle scores, but if they're not that great, i would apply to community hospitals where american grads don't want to go. i don't know if you'll need a visa but just keep in mind that not all programs sponsor visas. FREIDA website has some information on the programs, but it doesn't indicate minimum scores required or minimum US clinical experience requirements. i can't think of anything else off the top of my head, but if you have any other questions, feel free to ask. are you still in school or have you graduated? did you do the internship? phils boards?

  #46

Hi again uspinoydoc! Thanks for answering all my questions :P Yes I have already graduated and passed the local boards, both in 2004. I'm still working on my visa though so I still haven't scheduled my CS :? So now I should compile all the necessary documents and make them ready for the ERAS  Thank you!

Some more questions though, is it just a matter of making an ERAS and waiting to get an interview then the rest will follow? Or there is something more? What did you do to land on a residency so early? Please tell me if you don't mind? Also, how high should a step score be? What's wrong with the community hospital? Why do american graduates don't like it there?

Oki, that's about all the questions I have for you now. I'm sorry if they're a bit too much. Thank you again smiling face

kumusta! i graduated fatima 2003... and representing detroit, michigan smiling face if theres anyone in these parts email me..

  #48

fatima grad (97) here, too (hi exitssxyx!), in Maine.

I have been attempting to land on jobs as Phlebotomist or Medical Assistant here but no luck! :cry:It seems they require certification here first before one can practice as such. (higly-regulated here). So I think I will have too look for non-medical jobs to sustain me for the whole process of USMLE steps 1-3.

At first I was not even contemplating on working as a doctor here. Iwas-lawsuit ba. But then, trying to apply for these allied health professions is turning to be a bitter experience. Ironically, the road to MDdom is easier than the road to AH professions, at least here in my rural area.

Anyone here who's done with their reviewers? Can you pass them on to me? I will appreciate it if I will be spared such expenses.

  #49

hello kabayan! I am an Filipino MG also. CIM 2002! I am in Placentia, CA right now waiting for the result of orals and the match as well.

to rhonda, you need to secure your visa first because that is the most important thing. Once you have a visa, you can submit your application to ERAS come july. With regards to score, 80's will be fine just as long as you took it once. Community Hospitals are hospitals not affiliated with a university. They are hospitals which american graduates seldom apply because it helps a lot to apply for fellowship if you come from a university hospital but landing a fellowship coming from a community hospital is not impossible. The technique is apply early so that you will get more interviews. To find out about the latest requirements of the program, emailed them one by one. With regards to VISA, doesnt matter if they do not sponsor VISA because the ECFMG is the one sponsoring the J1 visa. You will know their email address at Freida. Do this as early as possible because it is difficult if you apply late like me. Hope I answered some of your questions. More power to you!
