Hello. I graduated in 2002 as a general physician, worked for one and a half years, and took this last year off. I've been trying to start studying for Step 1 but I was not very motivated at the beginning. Now I feel I have more motivation, but I keep procrastinating... I bought all the books I need including First Aid but whenever I sit down to study, I don't know how or where to start (specially with the Anatomy topics) and I just stress :? ! Can someone give me some words of inspiration or a little kick in the rear  , and suggest me how to start.. Thanks

You are not alone with this situation ? I am happy that you found this forum and now you can see lots of people with motivation problems. Here is a good idea
Get organized with each other's help and start studying in a group. P
If you want to start with Anatomy (EMBRYO/HISTO/GROSS/NEURO.),then....

then find someone to grab onto and have him/her drag you until you get going on your own. seriously. i was in your shoes, so i know the feeling.

the best way for me was to get involved in the daily chat sessions. doing this made me accountable. it's easy to keep up with because the chats usually only cover a maxiumum of 3 chapters a day, which most of the time are short. before you know it, you'll have covered a whole topic in no time. then just take little steps with the other topics (that aren't being discussed in a chat) and you'll be well on your way.

right now niti, kiranadi, krishi & Dr_lipika_Nayuak are finishing up the Immuno chats (one more tomorrow at 4pm EST covering the last three chapters of Kaplan's Immuno Lecture notes: Regulation and Tolerance
Transplantation Immunology, and Immunology Laboratory Procedures), so maybe you might think about starting there. if not, i highly recommend you join niti and her group when they start the anatomy chat (as she told you up above) and see if it's for you.

i remember my first chat session i attended. i didn't prepare like i wanted to, sat in on it as a passive member and no more than 5 minutes went by when i decided i needed to leave. not because the session wasn't going well, but because i was unable to follow along.

so make sure you come prepared. by that i mean you have done the reading and have put at least 10 questions together. you know, you get out what you put in.

other than that, you definitely need to put a plan together cuz by the sound of it it looks like you need structure. so i'd consider laying out a general plan for each month, then breaking that out over each day. this will take a little time, but will be well worth it.

you should always start your day by looking at what you have planned to read. and if for someone reason you didn't plan the day, then don't start reading until you do cuz then your day will more than likely go haphazardly and not be as efficient.

i could go on and on, but i've got my own studies to get back to. besides, i think you get the point. in general, do your best at staying structured AND MINIMIZE the distractions, one of which could very well be spending too much time perusing through this forum and/or any of the other forums.

NOW GET OFF YOUR BUTT AND DO SOMETHING!

1)Move your a--!
2)Start by reading First Aid and ABSORBING it and add notes to First Aid.
3)As Nico said try to have a structured schedule and minimize distraction
eg. the refrigerator, the Fedex, nagging spouse, phone, TV, etc
4) A GOOD study partner can help you stay motivated and can help
extracting and extrapolating information.

Thanks you guys, I am new, but I just love the way you guys motivate each other. Yesterday I started studying Biochemistry and I feel like I am on my way, anyway, I plan to take the Kaplan deluxe prep next year..but first I want to study on my own. smiling face Niti, thanks for the chat suggestion, I ll try, but the problem is that I am living abroad now, so 4pm eastern time is 4am for me!! I ll also look for a study partner and start planning my schedule. You guys are angels, thanks!!
