What test helps you differentiate between Folate and B12 deficiencies in patient with megaloblastic anemia :?:

Schilling test?

Excellent! The only thing is that in patients with severe and long standing folate deficiency cobalamine absorption can be decreased because of effect on intestinal mucosa.
There's actually more than one test, that could help. But for the board purposes - you'll be choosing from the bunch of options.
Serum levels of cobalamine or folate could be given. In case of B12 deficiency - methylmalonic aciduria is going to be present, which is a reliable sign (if patient doesn't have renal failure, but then again schilling test requires patient to have normal renal function).
That's an interesting problem to look into smiling face

I hope they will add some neurologic signs and thank you for the tips.

MMA in the urine, most specific ..boom ! hit ur diagnosis and treat to prevent peripheral neuropathy

  #6

That's what the question originally was about. You could also detect serum levels of MMA I suppose.
