hi cache,
an interjection,

rapid shallow breathing is also seen in copd and asthma, hence you cannot rule out choice d)airway obstruction

also profol( respiratory depressant) can cause rapid shallow breathing, i am sure there are other drugs which do the same.

also, interstitial fibrosis( cause of reduced lung compliance) can present with rapid shallow breathing.

i dont see why you think only metabolic acidosis can be the right answer

Doesnt metabolic acidosis cause Kaussmaul breathing?(Deep sighing respiration) as in alcoholics

seen in diabetic ketoacidosis

Yes whatever causes metabolic acidosis(Ketosis in DM or alcohol)
