Hello everybody! smiling face

I heard that doctors in the us spend all their time in the hospitals sad , that they work about 70-80 hours a week  , that they don't have time left to enjoy, spend their money, stay with their partner  and educate their children sad .
Is it true :?: ?
Can someone illuminate me please?

yes terid, this is what I've heard too... and i have to admit that it is one of my worries actually. Don't know if it's ok or not, but I sometimes ask myself if it is worthed....all this struggle to get there and realize that u actually....don't have a life anymore. this IS what we'll get afterall...

Hi terid 5,
yes that's true ...but it depends on how much money you want once ur practicing. in residency it is really tough, all u have to do is work(hosp) then sleep(home) bec. of fatigue fr working too hard.
BUT u'll have 21 days allowed leave in a yr. & u won't be working every weeknd. u will still have time to enjoy ur family & money... of course....
my hubby's now an attending, kids r getiing bigger & well disciplined, we're still busy but now things are a lot better schedule wise so it's my turn to shine but that doesn't mean family will be abandoned. They will always be a priority..what i'm trying to say is you will always have time with ur family as long as u know ur priorities. If they're ur priority then by all means there will always be good times with them & same time have time for your career. Just make sure u communicate w/ ur partner all the time.
good luck.. enjoy life w/ the ones u love while ur not THAT BUSY YET.

Hello Alina T and Tuesday! grin

Thanks a lot for ur precious answers.
But Tuesday, what d'u mean with "it depends on how much money you want once ur practising" :?:
D'u mean that after the residence, if I want to work less, earn satisfactory money (I don't need to be millionnaire) and have more time to live my life  that could be possible?

yes terid5... if you wanna be very busy in your practice... then that means lots of money... more patients... more pay.

US grads need to do that because they have to pay loans in medical school. But foreign grads don't have to pay a loan.

I plan to have just a small practice and have more time with family.

In the residency you have to work a lot
After that it depends on type of pracice
For example, in private practice, you spend 7-8 hours a day in clinic, add another hour or two per day for making rounds on your hospitalized patients, plus time on call depending on your call schedule.

It depends on the residency. I know a DR. in the ER and he only works three days a week. It dependes on where you live and how much you want to make really. I live in Californa.

Take care. And good luck!!
