Unfortunately, there is still racism in the US. But it's not as bad as it was 30-50 years ago. I live in a metropolitan area where people of all colors have finally the same opportunities. You'll be okay!

Does any one know of prejudice against female doctors wearing head scarf.? Does such a resident will be treated like any other resident by program? How would patients generally feel seeing by such a doctor. Though I am living in US for about 5 yrs and never had any bad experience in my daily life, but I never worked so I am not sure about work enviroment in healthcare field. Any response is appreciated.. Thanks

I've a number of residents who have worn headscarves and still do. They are no different that any other resident in the program. I wouldn't worry about it.

I don't think wearing a headscarf would get you in a trouble during residency because patients in a training medical facility generally have no choice whom to see, but you have to realize, that in real life many American born patients wouldn't go to a doctor in a headscarf. I had patients who refused to see a specialist just because he posted a page from Koran on the wall in his office.

Thanks yelenatx for sharing your experience. I am hoping that getting a residency because of my headscard would not be a problem. I hope that Program Directors dont think that way. Are there any PD's want to share their opinion on this subject. BBB..? I am leaning towards going to Pathology, considering that it may be a less issue being a Pathologist.

I've known residents with headscarves since I started working in this field since 1988. They aren't treated any differently. I wouldn't worry about this at all. You'll do fine - trust me!

Racism DOES EXIST in the US more than what you may think. Recently GOD'LY Red states seems to be rapidly marching towards radicalism. The priniciples and policies which made USA #1 country in the world are surrounded by racist & narrow minded neo-cons who have already begun eating up this great country. Remember, these people always disliked/hated you for some reason (religion/skin color/nationality etc etc) but were not out to bite you (due to fear of law) until recently, perhaps with the neo-cons winning in the recent 2 elections. Good news is that there is still a large number of US population (remember 48% voted for Blue) who appears to be open minded and apparantly have not sold yet in the hands of bias media and War kings & Queens. I would say do not worry for a second about those loosers who would discriminate against anybody who do not look like or act like them. There will always be people like that arround us. Look for those who are mentally normal (non-prejudice). You will have a decent idea when you will talk to them. If you feel discriminated, do not keep quite..but make a noise ...do not become an easy prey for them... file a law suit and kick their a*** ..........then you will see how easy you may floor them... America's constitution gives us freedom and protection against discrimination on color, religion, gender, ethnicity etc. Remember your rights. Even if you are not a US citizen you may still qualify for the basic rights if you reside within the country (to the best of knowledge...please check with the local authorities). Remember 2008 is the year of change and we all hope world will become once again a better place to live for normal healthy mind people from 2008. Bottom Line: Yes, racism does exist. Talk to programs and you will know. Bigger cities are more accepting for FMG's. Do not let go when you get discriminated but call your attorney. Stand up for yourself and do not let others take over. Know what the American constitution has to offer and how it protects you. Blue state might be a better choice if you are overly concerned but remember some kind of racims does exist in every state (Red in blue) and every country of the world (including yours). And all people are not bad either (No generalizations please). There are "few" red people I know who are decent and there are some blue folks who are HORRIBLE. My personal experience: I have found liberal and progressive people way better and nicer to deal with. Good Luck

It is very subtle. For example, they would make a funny gesture with their noses as they found out that I spoke Spanish... And there are too the ones who expect you to score lower than they just because you are Hispanic, and if you beat them by so much, they would get jealous and try to undermine you in every way they can... I would say yes, there is racism, but mostly hidden, which does not make it any less hateful. You will feel it. I had my most brilliant teacher, an African American psychiatrist graduated from Yale. He warned me about the glass ceiling. It's an imperfect world.

It means they do not accept themselves. Meanwhile, they wrinkle, and they will give work later to 1) plastic surgeons, and 2) dermatologists, 3) oncolgists (melanoma, etc)

It's obvious to anyone that who talks or think about racism is the RACIST! Yes that person himself is THE WORST RACIST! Why don't you all drop this topic and focus on your lives. Everybody is diffirent and this the only thing that makes our world interesting and fascinating to live in. Respect and honer the diffirences! It's nice to be diffirent from everybody. There is nothing to shame about or nothing to hold bitterness against to the people diffirent from you. After all we made by one GOD, we are all same! Stop this nonsence!!!! By talking like this you make things only worse!

Noelle and Esmeralda, I think you have gone too far, and this is becoming offensive. Yes, it would be foolish to say that racism doesn't exist, but do not generalize. It is painful to see such aggressive comments here on this forum, where no one cares about color of your skin. I don't believe you should be continuing this as you are offending a lot of good people, who don't deserve it. I am sorry if you had a bad experience, but this is the wrong place to get aggressive about it. I totally agree with ELM, this has to stop!

Well, I thougt it was just bantering. Head to head. I had to put up with some unwarranted aggression at professional sttings , and being the last in the pecking order, I could not get back. Take it easy. OK, let's stop.
