I'm a FMG currently preparing for step 1 and I would like to get into general surg. residency. I researched everything about the steps, match etc. However, its not completely clear to me how you become specialised in certain field of surgery. Meaning - do you have to apply for e.g. cardiothoracic surgery spot at the beginning? or do you finish general surg. residency and than you try for your desired fellowship?
I know neurosurg.,orthopedics is separate from the begging, correct? And than CT, breast surgery, transplant etc you only choose after completing general surgery residency?
Thank you so much for any relevant feedback or link where I could find the clear info on that
