it's not regression, that would be actiing younger, not helping.... displacement is usually one external thing transferred to another but she is suffereing from an internal problem... I don't know what altruism is so it could be that... could someone differentiate between altruism and sublimation?? (cuz she can't walk, but she goes into the special olympics...(that would be sublimation, but if she helps others walk that would altruism?)

maybe altruism fit better in this scenario, i checked its definition;

Guilty feelings alleviated by unsolicited generosity toward others

I dont see the q-But I think it had to do with a 10 year old girl who got injured and was confined to a wheelchair and was seen helping young kids in the pediatric area. What did this display??

The choices were altruism, displacement, regression, projection

Altruism is considered mature, it means giving and not expecting anything in return. It is regard for the dedication and welfare of others. In psychiatry it is closely reated to ethics and morals. Freud recognized altruism as the only basis for community interest.
First Aid uses the analogy of a Mafia boss giving to charities--{I thought this was incorrect in First Aid because they made it appear that you had to be a criminal to be altruistic-(I should really take the time to write the First Aid people about that.)

Projection is under the categoory narcissistic and is considered primitive and flimsy. A person attributes his wishes thoughts desires or emotions to someone else.

Regression iis immature I use the pnemonic BRIS for these- The person acts in a more infantile form or childlike patterns of behavior under stress.
BRIS stands for blocking ,regression, introjection,somatization.

Displacement- This is changing the target of emotion or drive while the person having the feeling remains the same. Displacement usually runs from higher to lower in a power hierarchy (This comes under anxiety defense) * For this 10 year old girl I go with displacement.

In answer to adeelmds q sublimation is when an unconscious socially unacceptable impulse is rerouted in a socially acceptable way. For example the kid who steals candy as a kid grows up to steal bases as a major league baseball player.

Once again this is the most ambiguous area!!
