Although parents usually must be give consent for medical procedures involving minor children, parental consent or notification is not required for minors when they have STDs (choice A), are in emergency situations, show drug/alcohol dependence, or need medical care in pregnancy. Good medical practice would include counseling the patient on prevention. (Choice B.) In this case, it is not necessary to notify state health authorities (choice C), his sexual partner (choice D) or his parents (choice E).

Ah, PsychDr2B--You return from the void!! I've been doing a search on your username for a while now in addition to sending out posts trying to track you down but to no avail until this...Forgive me for the public posting, but my inbox on this site is inoperable.

I can tell you I continue with great trials and tribulations through the wards now. In fact, I am in psychiatry at present! However, it has not been pretty--and this from someone who sees (saw!?) himself in the very field. Unfortunately, bedside manner is the least of their concerns here!! They just want you to Dx, Assess, and Plan--to hell with the "power of the relationship" and "healing listening compassion"...As soon as they're holed up safely in their offices they spout off about how much they dislike various patients and make fun of the others...Otherwise, I am still adjusting to the medications and the treatments and the rhythm of the wards is a challenge for me to acquire: I AM HURTING! It is times like these when I think back to you and know that you would not be like that, and I have a reason to go on with my battle--knowing that their is a type of doctor I must become--these other twits can't be allowed to take the battle.

I miss our rapport on the boards here. I wrote you an email a while ago, and I hope you received it. Without going into detail on this public forum, suffice it to say that I pray for your best success and happiness, and think of you from time to time knowing there are good, supportive people out there like you. I know I will have to take it to the battlefield again come Step 2 (and every "mini-board" post my 6 rotations this year). And thank you nce again for the Surgery review material--it was very kind of you, and a pleasant surprise.

Anyhow--please stay in touch and wishing you the best in pursuing your passions!!

I do agree the answer is B since thats what Mother Theresa would do.

But my question is.. if he is 15 yrs is he partially emancipated since I recall it to be 16 or more to be qualified for that. SO doyou have to get parental consent for that?

I know you have to notify State health since Gonnorrhea Syphilis and AIDS are reportable.. and my question is is HIV positive reportable too?

thanks in advance

hello, i guess you can find the answer in BRS ;
I agree that the boy in question is a minor however you do`nt need parental consent to treatin the following conditions:
1. emergency situatiions and a delay in tx can potentially harm the child
2. treatment of stds
3. prescription of ocps
4. medical care during pregnancy
5. tx of alcohol and drug dependence

The issue about reportable illnesses it stataed that in all states the following are reportable illnesses:
varicella, hepatitis, measles, mumps, rubella, salmonellosis shigellosis and tb
Reportable stds are: AIDS ,syphilis and gonorrhea not HIV positive status

I hope this helps
