oops, someone did put kite runner up...didn't look at the second pg....

omg, someone read salman rushdie's midnight children....amazing book....what a read...he's not exactly liked by the muslim community but i will not be a hypocrite n' denounce his novel......his midnight children was very well written...in fact, excellent

catch-22 by helen or hellen...goes along the same lines as midnight children...the writing style

I read kite runner ... pretty good ... but I wouldn't say one of the best ... lets hope they dont ruin the movie! (as they ruined Da vinci code)

u haven't seen the movie yet? me neither! i finished reading it last month...haven't had a chance to see the movie

I didn't read the book, but I saw the movie, excelent, though I closed my eyes during that horrible scene (you know which one for sure). By the way, if you watch it, notice a beautiful woman with a baby during the wedding scene, she's my best friend from Iran. She lives in China, where the movie was shot.

"The Alchimist' is from a Brazilian author. wink

I read "A Thousand Splendid Suns", awesome book! "One Hundred Years of Solitude" is very good. I love the "Harry Potter" series, I hope my kids will read them. I liked "Tuesdays with Morrie" and "How Doctors Think".

The problem with books of this kind (da vinci code or kite runner) you dont know what to believe and what to take for granted ... what are facts and what is fiction. I know they are very good writers. They are masters of the craft. But what should I take and what should I keep?

Kite runner has a lot of thoughtful things and emotional scenes but it has some b s too. Some books can be dangerous for ignorants.

Does anyone agree?

I hated The Da Vinci Code and J. J. Benitez's Caballo de Troya. I couldn't finish any of them. Their imagination insulted my inteligence! I am that kind of person that says "Oh, come on!" for this kind of narrative, so not everybody likes to go to the movies with me unless I promise I won't comment on anything. I noticed something was wrong in the "Sixth Sense" from the very beginning...

So, I agree, praying.

Oh! One more wonderful book: The Physician.

arlete, if no one goes to the movies w/ ya, Ill volunteer wink I'm the same way, if I see something stupid I have to comment, can't help it...or if something's scary or painful I'll squeal...yup goes that way too...

p499, I find it hard to believe that if someone is an avid reader, they'll be so ignorant to actually think it's true rather than read for the actual enjoyment of reading....I find that ppl who don't read much are the ones who seem to be out of touch n' ignorant....dunno, probably it's just me, I don't expect to take anything from novels like da vinci or kite runner...I read them thinking it's all fiction, I never make an assumption politically or religiously...I read it for the plot or the suspense,...like kite runner I loved the way it came full circle...like the circle of life...the author brought it all together n' had so much symbolism...

OK, I'll call you next time! grin

I dont like the idea of wasting time reading a book while the whole thing is fiction. I rather read an other book that I could learn something from.

The same applies to movies, I prefer movies that you can learn something from or atleast open your eyes to something new. I find pure action movies that were made just for the sake of action and adrenaline rush useless and a waste of time. I liked matrix because there was a new idea behind it ... i liked enemy of state (you know why) ... and so on ... but James Bond, Borne Identitiy and that crap shaking head

I beg to differ, if you want to learn, you can learn from anything & anywhere...fiction or nonfiction, books, movies, real life, the news, your own experiences, anything...nothing can stop anyone from learning in fact...try that...try to stop learning, n' you can't, it's built into us...you can learn a new perspective from the most insignificant things even

Wag The Dog is not the same as American Pie.

Stephen Hawking's Brief History of Time is not the same as Harry Potter.

And not all knowladge is the same.

I love Consipiracy theories and some good old lawyer novels.

Robert Ludlum and John Grisham. Ludllum is the best cos i havent so much detail to a person depiction anywhere. Anything which would remotely help the reader to get in the mind set of the character is detailed in such a way that its not boring.

I agree, however some people (including myself) can simply enjoy some fiction books/movies. I don't see anything wrong with some fiction or magic realism from time to time. raised eyebrow

Oh yeah we all have a inner kid somewhere in us. We should let it out more often, its really worth all the stress we bear.

2nd reason i watch Kid's movies to actually see what message is being sent to the kids. If there is something wrong with the message or inappropriate with the norms of one's culture, religion etc its the responsibility of the adults to make sure and see what message are their kids picking up.

So it usually serves a dual purpose when watching movies like Harry Potter or Narnia or The Golden Compass.

Moi 2 bits worth

all not knowledge may not be the same but the act of learning is...what about the reference to nonfiction being more intellectually stimulating than fiction? so the works of shakespeare, mark twain, steinbeck, orwell, raplh ellison n so on all go down the drain bcoz they've written fiction literature?

  #94

ow, p499 gimmi a rebuttal here! i'm waitin 4 fo ure opinion...ure 1 of the few ppl in the forum who isn't scared to give their opinion....pretty pleeez
