Berserk (ベルセルク, Beruseruku?) is a dark fantasy manga by mangaka Kentaro Miura.

With over 29 million volumes sold, it is one of the most successful adult manga ever. Berserk's setting is inspired by medieval Europe. It centers around the life of Guts, an orphaned mercenary warrior, and his relationship to Griffith, the leader of a mercenary band called the Band of the Hawk (鷹の団, Taka no Dan?). Both the manga and anime are noted for their heavy violence.

As of July 2007, 31 tankōbon of the manga have been published in Japan.
  • Guts (ガッツ, Gattsu?)
Guts is the protagonist of the story; a tall, muscular male with a huge sword called the Dragon Slayer along with a prosthetic left forearm that has a magnetic grip and also conceals a cannon. Guts is a Byronic Hero; he is born as one who may be able to struggle against Causality, but seemingly unable to affect it on a large scale. The Golden Age story arc of the series revolves around Guts's turbulent childhood and adolescence in a mercenary band after reluctantly being adopted by the band's leader Gambino at the behest of Gambino's lover, Shizu, and his subsequent joining with, and departure from, the Band of the Hawk. The dynamic relationship between Guts and Griffith, the leader of this group, forms the primary focus of the manga for the first thirteen volumes. After the events of the Eclipse, in which he loses his left forearm and right eye, Guts seeks revenge on Griffith. Upon doing so, he is subsequently reunited with Casca after two years separation. After the Incarnation Ceremony at Albion, Guts now travels with a new group of companions. He currently possesses the Berserker's Armor, an ancient, cursed suit of armor that allows the wearer to overcome his physical and mental boundaries in combat greatly increasing his fighting strength. Doing so damages his body and allows his inner beast, a feral dog-like demon, to take over and endanger everyone in the vicinity, friend or foe.

Im not sure but is it a metal band that is writing the tale?

What do you most like about it?

For those who dont know what manga means (like me!) :

Manga (漫画, Manga?) listen (help·info) (pl. manga) is the Japanese word for comics. The drawers of these comics are called mangaka. Outside of Japan, it refers specifically to comics originally published in Japan. Native Japanese are often unaware of the use of manga to refer to Japanese comics specifically. As of 2007, manga represents a multi-billion dollar global market.[1] Manga developed from a mixture of ukiyo-e and foreign styles of drawing, and took its current form shortly after World War II.

Though roughly equivalent to the American comic book, manga holds more importance in Japanese culture than comics do in American culture. In economic terms, weekly sales of comics in Japan exceed the entire annual output of the American comic industry [citation needed]. Additionally, manga and comics in general are more widely consumed among the adult population of Japan than in America. [citation needed] Several major manga magazines which contain about a dozen episodes from different authors sell several million copies each per week.

If you v never read comics this is the place to start, bc it will give a very good impression about the best of the bests in the world of manga. What I like about the series the most is not the art work, although its amazing, I like the storyline the best and the main character. Its not a about the metal band mate, but the journey of a swordsman, his twisted childhood to his journey with his fellow war band, a search for self, for vengeance, for love and for friendship. It s a great series, though its going to cost u a lot to buy the whole series, I believe there are currently 40 volumes.

Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser

    New York Times Bestseller

I must say it is a very interesting book. I just read it recently, although it is not new (published in 2001). If you eat Fast Food (99.976% of us!), you should read it. You will be amazed.

Here are some points I picked out for you:

"Chicken McNuggets were introduced nationwide in 1983. Within one month of their launch, the McDonald Corporation had become the second-largest puchaser of chicken in the United States. Surpassed only by KFC."

"The medical literature on the causes of food poisoning is full of euphuisms and dry scientific terms: coli form levels, aerobic plate counts, sorbitol, MacConkey agar, and so on behind them lies a simple explanation for why eating a hamburger can now make you seriously ill: There is shit in the meat."

"It currently opens about five new restaurants every day and at least for of them over seas. Within the next decade, Jack Greenburg, the company’s chief executive, hopes to double the number of McDonalds."

"... two years later, when McDonalds opened in Kuwait the line of cars waiting at the drive through window extended for seven miles. Around the same time a KFC restaurant in Saudi Arabia’s city of Mecca, set a new sales records for the chain earning $200,000 in a single week during Ramadan, the Muslim holy month."

At the end of the book he added about 60 pages of notes, sources, bibliography to support the unbelievable facts he pointed out in his book!

Combo sir? Should I supper size it sir? Dessert sir? How about a milk shake.... sir? NO GOD Damn it just a Big Mac and a bottle of water!!! mad grin

The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari, Robin Sharma. Simply life-altering. Everyone must make the time to read this at least once.

Who Will Cry When You Die? Also by R. Sharma

The Five People You Meet in Heaven, by Mitch Albom. A very interesting concept, a good read. Also, Tuesdays with Morrie, by the same author.

Jonathan Livingston Seagull and Illusions, by Richard Bach. Amazing books, that gave me my first taste of books of this genre.

The Prophet, by Kahlil Gibran. A master-piece.

The Secret, by Rhonda Byrne. The book looks more frivolous than it actually is.

Harry Potter, by JK Rowling, esp the last 4 chunky ones.grin

Linda Goodman's Sun Signs and Star Signs. I really enjoy the way she writes.

A Short History of Nearly Everything, by Bill Bryson. He started off as a travel writer, then tried his hand at scientific writing, something he excels at. His humor and witty, sometimes dry way of putting across points keeps me in splits while telling me things I never knew I never knew. Top it off with his British way of using words [though he's actually American], this is a must-read.
