commonest org causing meningitis in a 19yr old girl???

  #2

neisseria meningitidis

  #3

but i found it to be strep.pneum in one of the que when i'm doing kap q bank

yes, I have noticed that too. Some books mention neisseria as #1 others strep. pneum for that age population. I think for S1 purposes they will give you some other piece of information that will clue you to one of the two bugs. If not, I woud bet for n. meningitidis.

So what would be the most common cause of meningitis in a 2 month old kid and a 2 year old child?

E.Coli in <6m and H.Influenza in 6m to 6yr age gp

For below 2 months some will say Group b Strep/E.Col
*For above 2 years its Strep Pneumo then Neisseria, we immunize against H. Flu. if Im not mistaken.
These kind of qs can look easy.

The HIB vaccine dramatically curtailed positive spinal fluids with H. influenzae. This vaccine came out in 1985 (my daughter was 5 years old). I think I've only seen one CSF positive for H. flu since then. We used to see it at least a couple of times a year before that.

As far as the 19 year old - that age group is very susceptible in group settings (military, college) so they're probably going for N. meningitidis as the answer. This bug is nothing to mess around with. The patient can die in 12-24 hours.

I've seen S. pneumo in many age groups.
