I think it should still be PCP. Death in AIDS is due to opportunistic infection and the most common opp infection is PCP. on the other hand, PCP is curable today - can't be sure if it ranks as MC cause of death in the US. Has anyone heard the report which says that the leading cause of death in HIV patient is liver failure?

PCP as far as i know

  #10

Actually I believe its a "wasting syndrome"

Also I believe a person dies of TB every minute (Or something astronomical like that)

MAI

PCP comes way too early, long before TB and others kick in. (if pt. were to die from it then you wouldnt have to read about the later ones, right?) besides nowadays it is prevented in AIDS pt.

on the other hand, M avium-intercellulare is way more resistant and therefore less probable to be cured (remember we need 5-6 drugs for the sucker!!)

so i would choose MAI
