• Patients present with progressive dysphagia first to solids then liquids
• Squamous cell carcinoma - affects the upper esophagus Risk factors: smoking, ethanol, Plummer Vinson syndrome
• Adenocarcinoma - affects the lower esophagus Risk factor: Chronic GERD (Barrett esophagus)
➢ Initial test is barium swallow
➢ Best initial diagnostic test: endoscope
• X-ray /CT of chest to check for metastases
➢ If no metastases, localized tumor - Tx. Surgery + chemotherapy with 5 -fluorouracil
➢ If metastasis is present - Tx. (Please see book for further details)
