A 35-yr old homeless patient presents to you with severe fatigue, polyarthropathy, and exhaustion. On further interaction, he exhibits bizarre behavior reminiscent of a schizophreniform disorder. He claims he had a disease that "ran in my family" that was diagnosed and treated in the last 3 months with a medication, but is unable to provide further details. He states that his joint problems are long-standing. Physical exam reveals only venous distension in the umbilical region. A routine lab workup reveals a relatively severe aplastic anemia. What is the cause of his anemia?
