Hey guys, what the heck is this thing?
Does it just hold nitrogenous waste in a little sack until the kidneys get going and waste can be pumped into the amniotic cavity? If so, what the heck is it doing invading into the umbilical cord?
Also, what is the maternal interface for amniotic fluid. I know the whole syncto/cyto/villi - spiral artery/sinusoid for blood, but am having a bit of trouble tracking down how the amniotic fluid is regulated by mom.

allantois, a small outpouching from the caudal end of the yolk sac, appears and extends into the connecting stalk. This will be involved in formation of the bladder later on, as well as in early blood formation.
and as far as amniotic fluid is concerned it is not regulated by mother...
just placenta....and fetus mantain it
any placental insufficiency due to cronic maternal hypertension decreases the formation of amniotic fluid..i think this is the way maternal condition involved in regulation of amniotic fluid

I DON'T TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOUR STATEMENT MAGHANA,YES PART OF THE AMNIOTIC FLUID IS THE RESULT OF PLCENTA FILTRATE BUT MOSTCOMES FROM THE KIDNEY .ASFOR THE WAY AMNIOTIC FLUID COMMUNICATES WITH THE PLACENTA ,IT IS VIA THE THE FETAL CIRCULATIONAFTER IT IS ABSORBED FROM THE GUT.THIS SPLAINS WHY IN OSOPHAGEAL OR DUODENAL ATRESIA THERE IS POLYHYDROMNIAS.
AS FOR THE KIDNEY AND URINARY SYSTEM AS A WHOLE,I BELIEVE WHEN IT DEVELOPS IT WLL INCREASE THE EXCRETION OF FLUID INTO THE AMNIOTIC CAITY INCREASING IT AND ALOOWING IT TO CIRCULATE BACK TO THE GUT AND THENCE TO THE ETAL CIRCULATION AND INTO THE PLACENTA IA THE UMBILICAL ARTERY.
