Two brothers have been fighting. Exasperated,the mother says to one of her son, "go to your room until you apologise to your brother for hitting him" the mothers words are an example of application of?

The answer Negative Reinforcement.

Can somebody plz explain me how. This Q&A is in Kaplan Lecture. Plz explain.

I had the same question. Yet, when I read the explanation and try to put on the 2 x 2 table in the text (p75), then it makes more sense.

- Stimulus (reinforcer) = staying in your room

- Behavior (operant response) = apologizing

This stimulus is a negative reinforcer because this stimulus, when removed following the operant response (apology), will strengthen the probability of that response occurring.
