Each program does different things. I send out just 2-4 batches of rejections at one time. It's too difficult to send out acknowledgements on a daily basis, and even when I received paper applications, it was impossible to do.
2. is it ok to write them a follow-up letter/email? (won't they find it rude?) No, it's not rude, but don't be surprised if you don't get much of a response. With the number of applications in total, and 40-60 emails a day asking for application information, a follow-up email may just be lost in the crush.
3. and if 2 is ok, then when is the best time to send it? Unknown.......
