Hi everyone, I am planning to apply for neurology, which, as you may or you may not know, is a PGY2-PGY4 specialty; that is, it requires a year of preliminary training in an ACGME accredited program. I am targeting an H1 visa. Suppose I find a neurology program willing to sponsor my H1 visa, what about the preliminary year? Do I need a sponsorship from the institution offering me the preliminary training too? and if not, will i have a problem after finishing my preliminary year on a J1 visa? I am also considering subspecializing in neurology later, how useful will an H1 visa be? Thank to all of you for the invaluable advices and clarifications... Idriss

The majority of the prelim spots in our program are with persons who are PR's or citizens. Occasionally we will have a person on a J-1 visa - no big deal. If the applicant wants an H-1b visa, they will have to have the program FOLLOWING their preliminary year, sponsor their H-1b visa. We don't sponsor an H-1b visa for one year.
