Hi everyone
My grammer is still broken but I am going to try my best. Here is the story..
Nowadays, like so many people in these forum I am also trying to manage and decide which programs to apply.I am living in a small city in TX,which has a university affilieted commmunity hospital in it also, but sure! it is not the best in the entire country  .
Today I went to pediatrics department to introduce myself and to talk about my interest to their program and my plans for next year (which are, going to apply to their program and (unfortunately) stay in this small city)..Anyway I have talk to Resident Coordinator of the program, actually she was very nice to me...First of all she asked me my visa type, when I told her my type  which is neither J1 nor H1 right now, she was suprised and told me that they are not accepting any applicants who are holding visas, other than j1 or h1...That was the first thing that suprised me..If I am wrong please correct me guys, for FMGs ECFMG sponsors J1 after one get accepted to a program ,anyway she was not aware who is sponsoring the j1,and was thinking ,if an applicant who does not hold h1 or j1 cannot apply to their program... :? You might think they do not accept fmg's but the program has total of 4 fmgs out of 18 residents....

The second thing was,she told me that for IMG's their program require " 3 year previous pediatrics experience, preferably in US" :!:
((She also gave me a print out of the program requirements written on it which I have paste below, please check the complete sentence,I did not change one letter!! )) That was the second shock  .I said that "I am really curious about one thing, maybe it is because of being a foriegner but I can not get the point at the moment,if an FMG has 3 year previous pediatrics experience in US,which means she /he is already done with her/his residency why he/she would like to apply to your program, which is going to be a second pediatrics residency for him/her  For making things stronger or to make sure

At the end of the briefing I had a conclussion of that they dont want me in the program and try to make things impossible for me

I would like to share with you guys, dont you thing it was weird :?:

If you are a foreign graduate we have additional criteria that must be met as follows:

You must have 3 years of previous experience.(preferably in the U.S. )
You must have ECFMG.
You must have three letters of recommendation; one must be from an academic pediatrician.
You must be eligible for J-1 visa if applicable.
Our institution does not permit H-1 visas.

It doesn't sound like an IMG friendly program. Although it does say "preferably" not mandatory.

Good luck (and yes, it's wierd). 8)

it would be illegal (or at least morally questionable) to say they don't take FMGs. So many programs put in their requirements unreasnoable amounts of US clinical experience. Most programs like this require 1 year of US experience. They know that means you have already started your US residency. You can transfer after your first year if you want (and the program will accept you). It shows them you have now gained USCE and you know how the US system works. 3 years might be meant for US IMGs who went to Carribean school. They do their two years of clinical work in the US. So for them, it would be equivalent to requiring 1 year of residency plus two years of clinical work as a student. Hope that helps. As for visa issues, that is common. Best to try and get a green card if possible!

Well. small town, USA and IMG friendly...humm...not a great combination..
Trust me..if they couldnt fill their slots...they will do anything to have you and on the other hand if they have plenty of applicants and specially AMG....they will be the most rude you have ever seen. I would recommend to pursuade them to have you as an observer atleast and then in the match you can apply to other program.

I dont mind when programs prefer AMG's because it makes sense that AMG's went to school in USA and have a first right on seats then IMGS...but I think there should be clear universal guidelines for IMGS to apply and for the selection process. Programs take advantage of the lack of clear instructions by NBME. There might be programs out there which are bias and may not like you just because you may not look like them or act like them. Welcome to the earth

Hi, I feel really sorry for you!
I don't understand their VISA problem...nobody holds an J1 clinical before the residency starts and if, the visa depends on the place where you are working. Moreover, even you are not on a J1 at the moment you could be elegible...
Second, they say "3 years experience", but they do not mention pediatrics at that point and they also just talk about "preferably US experience"....they should have made that clearer from the beginning!
very strange program, discriminating, it seems to me!
Probably, one can be happy not to work with these people!!!!!
good luck to you in your career and all the best
anka
