BBB, I have been a spectator to your selfless dedication to helping people. We truly admire you. I am a 30-yr-old medical graduate. My background I am an Indian IMG...graduated in 1998. In 1999 - did my internship, later 1 yr leprosy resident medical officer. Then, I did 3yrs dermatology, completed residency in India last month. Now I plan to take MLE in 2005 and run for the 2006 match. I need a visa to the US. Achievements so far: I have 5 indexed articles and 6 non-indexed articles besides a postgraduate thesis. I have made one oral presentation at a conference. Besides, I am pursuing a bioinformatics course also (I can pursue some more too...like drug designing&patenting, medical ethics....will they help?) I have 3 LORs from Indian doctors (1 is of international repute) In this regard, I have a few Qs... 1. What are my chances of getting into dermat...any program, even community? 2. What scores do I need, or will any suffice? 3. Will the gap from year of graduation i.e. 6yrs make a difference? 4. Am I overqualified for residency? 5. Can I take up IM and then jump to dermatology, a year later? If yes what are the chances?6. Do I need to do externship or observership? 7. Do I need to publish more articles? 8. What do I need to do apart from above, to make it into dermat. since it is very important for me as I am quite old and still not married...cannot do double residency (first one and then second). I will do whatever you advise in terms of scientific content etc. Please be lavish in your advise. In short, I want dermatology (1st choice) and maybe pathology or IM (2nd choice). Can you give me your complete and valuable guidance? Where do I need to improve to better my chances? Thanking you, I remain. Yours sincerely,

Unknown - I work in Internal Medicine. The only thing that I know of for Derm is that you need to have stellar USMLE scores, published research, etc. I am not qualified to give advice about your chances in a program where I have little or no experience. Sorry.

Unknown - I work in Internal Medicine. Can you please let me know, if I do not happen to pile up a stellar score...do I have any chances to get IM with my achievements...if I opt it as a second choice?? Thanks.

The same thing that I always post: What are your scores, your visa status, your interviewing skills? Can you hold your own in an interview? What makes you a better applicant than the person sitting next to you? How do you feel you will fit in with the patient population that you will be serving? With the other residents currently in the program? Where are you looking at? Community vs university? Small town vs large town? There are so many variables that I can't begin to say that you will have a 50% or 20% or 90% chance of getting into any program. There are so many things that are unknown..... Sorry, I know - not the answer that you wanted to hear!
